Gloster Gauntlet K5289

Hi all

Whilst researching our Air cCdet Squadron that was formed in January 1942, I discovered that soon after formation the unit was given the above aircraft as an Instructional Airframe. Having acquired the RAF Record card on the aircraft it transpires it last served with 17 Squadron before being withdrawn from service. One of my Squadron staff colleagues wishes to make a model of the aircraft and I would like to ask if anyone could provide any information on the aircraft in particular and the colour scheme it would have worn in 17 Sqn service as this is likely what it would have worn as the Instructional airframe.

Many thanks

I remember seeing a photograph of a Gloster Gauntlet fuselage in the Failsworth scrapyard in copy of Airfix Magazine in about 1972 or 3. I think the caption stated that the photograph was taken in the late 50s. Does anyone know anything about this fuselage and what became of it? Apart from the Finnish example are there any other known remains which could form the basis of a restoration?

Profile publications Gloster Gauntlet have a 3 veiw colour of a 17 sdn on th inside cover. Also two photos of camouflaged Gauntlets taken in 1938. See poor quality scan.

gloster gauntlet K5289

The book ‘ Wings of Silver’ in the ‘On Target’ series shows a very good colour image of a 17 Sqdn Gauntlet with a good description of the dimensions of the roundels and serial numbers. This is ideal if the model is of the aircraft in the pre war silver scheme. The squadron retained their Gauntlets until June 1939 when indeed they would have been repainted in the standaard green/brown camouflage with the undersurfaces either retaining the silver or light grey.
National markings would have been red/blue roundels on the upper surfaces and fuselage sides.
There is a similar reference in John Lake ‘Wings of Fame’ Volume 16, Aerospace publishing Ltd

In Alex Crawfords book Bristol Bulldog & Gloster Gauntlet there is a colour side veiw of a pre war 17 sdn Gauntlet. But in 1938 they where camouflaged.
