I was always impressed with this a/c during the times I saw it display during the 50’s and 60’s. My question is, has anybody attempted to restore one to flying condition or are there any plans to do so, or would there be problems in certification of the airframe and engines.
Are there any about, and I doubt it, that could be ground run?
I assume that the last one to fly is the example at D/X, is this being restored to a presentable condition for the new museum.
I still have the Dinky Toy version but my knowledge of the current state of survival of these a/c is limited, perhaps I should have Googled before writing this.
Don’t forget, 25 years since John Lennon left us.

Hi Doug,
Years ago i knew a guy who was once among other things a Javelin pilot at West Raynham. Not sure of his service record but if i can track him down i will pass on your contact details if you want to PM them to me.

Hi first of all it’s great there are still a lot of people enthused with the Hucclecote Horror or Brockworth Beauty, the choice of names is yours! In answer to Pete’s question at the very beginning. The only Javelin that would stand a chance of even ground running is 897 at Duxford. This is for two reasons. One she is the only one that, as far as I know still, has engines. Reason two is that all of the Javelin fleet underwent a little bit of ‘surgery’ to stop anyone trying to ever get one flying. This consisted of cuts to the tracks, which run inside the fuselage and are what the Sapphires actually run on. I can vouch for this ‘modification, as I was a member of the Avon Aviation Museum, and can remember crawling through the exhaust hole to take a look at this (I hasten to add, not for the claustrophobic!)

The biggest pity is that she’s not in flying condition.

I used to work with a guy who flew them and he used to tell an amusing tale to anyone willing to listen. Apparently one day he was flying in to RAF Geilenkirchen. Now anyone who knows that place will tell you how close it is to the Dutch border. He suffered a total brake failure on landing and when he asked the tower for his time of landing for the accident report he was told “1302 in Germany, 1304 in Holland.”

Just found this, not spotted it before. Stills of XA801, ending with the ‘dismantling’. Upsetting.

I may have a copy somewhere Steve, as I’ve got the stick out of XA801 (allegedly) and remember seeing the photos. I don’t think it described which yard. The stick came from Germany! Do you still have a ‘surplus’ brake lever, I’m suddenly after one and was looking at old threads.
