Ok, I will be returning to the country I was born in for the first time in over 20 years to see in my Grandfather’s 90th birthday. Should be fun and it will be interesting to see all the changes to old neighbourhoods. I will be there from June 19-26.
Questions for residing Kiwis:
Anything special happening in late June in the North Island?
Any good domestic defence publications that might be worth a look at?
Are the prices of things like milk and bread still high compared to Oz?
Has there been any significant earthquake activity lately?
Regards, Glenn.

Have just returned, and yes the weather did delay the flight for about 30min from Brisbane into Auckland, but we moved on from there right away and stayed in Taupo on the first night, so we missed the massive storm front that hit the North that night. The weather for the next two days in Napier was wet but after that it was good but cold, not too cold, but cold enough. The South has looked brilliant for the skiers with healthy falls over the last few days.
I did manage to get online with my Aunty’s computer on Sunday night (23rd) but only long enough to check my hotmail, which was full of junk. I was online with an e-mail station at the Motel near Auckland air port last night for an hour or so for only 6 bucks, was able to catch up a little.
All round, a great week off and New Zealand is oh so beautiful, forgot just good it is, I mean it has been 21 years nearly since I was last there.
Regards, Glenn.

RE: Off we go….
Bad time to come Glenn… unless you like heavy rain and flooding in the North and snow and cold weather in the South Island (If you came to ski it is perfect weather in the south at the moment).
“Will see you in a week unless I can log on in that time somewhere in NZ. “
We have lictricity… had it for a few weeks now. }>
If you are anywhere near a city in the North Island (or south for that matter) you will find many cyber cafe’s. If you are staying with friends or at any reasonable hotel internet connections are rather cheap here. (You only pay for toll calls and a monthly rental on the phone line… for example I pay about $30 for a phone line for my computer per month. Add to that $14.95 for 150 hours of internet per month (roughly 5 hours per day for 30 days) and most people can afford it. (As long as the ISP provider has a local number the call is free so it costs me a total of $44.95 per month for unlimited local calls plus 150 hours internet.

RE: Nearly there..
Sorry… I stopped looking because I haven’t seen it in the shops for about the last year. It was published by the NZ defence department and was quite a good read, though it was an official publication so any there was little criticism about equipment or leadership.

Nearly there..
June 19th is less than 2 weeks away now. Garry, any word on that magazine you mentioned?? I may have time to pop into an internet cafe while I am over there, but otherwise I will be offline for a week guys and girls.
Regards, Glenn.

“Why don’t you all convert to Euro and make it easier…”
How would that make things easier? 🙂

RE: Coins..
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-04-02 AT 05:37Â AM (GMT)]Many of those who came out to NZ and Australia came to get away from Europe. (Of course a lot that went to Australia were sent and had little choice in the matter)… Hey Geforce… you could go to the UK and steal a piece of bread and demand to be sent to Australia… }>
We started out with pounds and shilings etc etc but changed to dollars as we drifted apart from the UK.
“though you have always been so dependent on the UK”
For quite a few years we did look toward the UK as the “Mother country” but distance and events have changed this.
After WWII Europe was poor and closed up ranks and greatly reduced dairy exports. This effected us quite badly (financially and morally) as we were quite reliant on dairy as the core of our income.
It is still traditional to go on an OE (Overseas Experience) and that more often than not involves a few months to a few years in London, but apart from having a governor general (Queens representitive) which is now a token position many no longer look to the UK as the Home country.

RE: Coins..
How come you actually pay with the dollar, though you have always been so dependent on the UK. Why don’t you pay with the Pound?
By: Glenn - 20th April 2002 at 12:01
Coins..
Well yes, better than our pitiful little $2 coin which is so easily LOST.
Regards, Glenn.

RE: Going to NZ in June.
Why don’t you all convert to Euro and make it easier … I would love to see Euro’s with Kangoo’s and Kiwi’s, must be more interesting than King Albert II 🙂
I would also like to visit Oz or Kiwi, but it’s too expensive. Pity, I would really give anything to go to Oz.

Yes… quite weird making the coin worth the smaller amount actually physically smaller than the larger denomination coin… Us crazy Kiwis… }>

RE: Going to NZ in June.
I’ll probably be heading to NZ in June or July as well for a ski trip with some mates, any idea how much ski passes are to the Remarkables and how much I should guestimate for spending money per day (i.e., how much are meals etc. over there?).

RE: Going to NZ in June.
No to the earthquake activity.
There is one local defence publication that is quite good (can’t remember its name off hand… but I’ll have a look..)
Once you translate your money to Kiwi dollars you’ll probably find things reasonable in price. Just remember the little gold coin here is the ONE dollar and the big gold coin is TWO dollars… 🙂
