Golf and warbirds?

So the first day of this new LIV Golf tournament in London this week had, among many other things, a flyby of what CNN called “some old airplanes.”  Looks to me like 3-4 Spitfires, maybe a Hurricane?, a Mustang and a Thunderbolt. That would have been worth the price of admission, and I care nothing for golf.

It’s a lousy snapshot taken by someone who doesn’t know anything about airplanes, but it’s all I could find.

A late friend used to delight in telling me about the time in the late 1970s, a friend and fellow club member, buzzed his golf party on a fairway with his Corsair.

Knowing the area, well north of the local airport in a unpopular area, the event sounds plausible.

The gentleman in question did have a Corsair at the time (he flew it in “Black Sheep Squadron”) and later had a Mustang. His son now flies a Bucker Jungmann with quite a history.

Now that’s a round of golf worth watching.

As far as I’m concerned, the best use of a golf course is, it’s somewhere you can put your Tiger Moth down in a pinch.

Not London really, just south of the Hemel exit on the M1 motorway.

Saw the Blades turning over Chesham about 4 times on Saturday evening ( 19.00 hours or so)

Perhaps flybys, and a wide circuit to return.

In the context of Saudi Arabia’s present sports’ spending spree – which I’ve heard described in the media as ‘sportswashing’ – one cannot help but recall Oscar Wilde’s words about the person who knows the price of everything, and the value of nothing.

Ah, the Blades. Better eyes than me, mate.

I’m still trying to figure out what, if anything, a warbird flyover has to do with a golf tournament funded by a regime of very questionable ethics. I hope the Saudis at least covered the fuel bill for that performance.
