Does anyone know any good bars in Brugge which serve a good selection of beers and don’t con the customers by serving beers wrongly? We know of ‘t Brugs Beertje but that is closed on Wednesdays and we want to find somewhere decent to drink on a Wednesday. Preferably one which doesn’t just serve Stella, Leffe, Hoegaarden and Jupiler. I’m into rare beers and especially Roman beers 😀

Also what frustrates me about the British is that they stick to one beer for like an hour. Belgians drink aprox 4 pints an hour. Normally that means if you enter a bar at 11 o’clock in the evening, apart from the bartender and some new-age alcohol-haters you won’t meet anyone sober. If you stick to one beer for an hour, every beer tastes like urine!!! Ohh, and another big mistake. Tourist usually order half a liter of beer. Don’t. Order small beers, they are much tastier. Especially this time of the year your beer will became warm and bugs will be swimming in it. I like my beers ice cold, even the ones which should not be put in the fridge like Duvel or Westmalle. I always put them in the freezer for a while. That’s my humble opinion ofcourse, most beer-specialist will think I’m nuts however warm beer is disgusting.
I stick to a beer for so long because it is impossible to get it at home so I appreciate it while I am able. It is Ok for Belgians to drink so much because they have access to those beers all the time and don’t view them the same way. And I just order beers which are poured from the bottle, a 33cl measure like Sloeber and have one in a night then I can appreciate the taste. You don’t appreciate the taste of beer if you’ve had a different one immediately before it. I could not drink a heavy chilled dark, chilling Rochefort 10 is sacriledge in my opinion 😀

I have supplied the correct words to Ben – and saved the cost of a dictionary into the bargain – so this post is now rendered superfluous.
Also it contained a quote from Ben with a rude word in it. 😮

Actually there’s no such thing as a real “Belgian Bar”, there are just bars which sell Belgian beer. Belgians normally stick to “pintjes”, especially after working days. The heavy beers are too expensive, too fat and after a while your bottom starts itching. This last detail may sound disgusting, but it may cause a lot of unpleasantness the day after. 😀

We went into Beertje every night except Wednesday last year, and had some great beers, including some new ones for us. On the Wednesdays we ended up in De Zandloper which is run by cheats and con artists and I can only advise people not to go in here. I had my first drink in Beertje on 11th September 2001 when I had a Sloeber. We go to Belgium every year and spend 10 days there on our main holiday (apart from the short visits for “booze flights” in March and November). We like to try unusual beers which we can’t get at home because then we can choose ones to buy when we do our Christmas and spring beer shopping in Brussels. The only problem with Beertje is that it’s too small. I won’t go in a bar if I have to stand up or share a table because I like to savour my beer and can take 90 minutes to fully enjoy a Sloeber.

If the Little Bear is shut on a Wednesday, then never visit Brugge on a Wednesday,
a real gem of a bar !
It was a while ago but seem to remember through the alcohol induced fuzz that the Staminee De Garre was very good and the Hotel Erasmus had a well stocked selection.
Give this site a look it might point you in the right direction, you will probably have to ask locally for “pointing yourself in the right direction” back to where you are staying after you have imbibed unless you keep a map in your pocket 😀

Thanks Ben. I avoid the moules anyway, can’t stand the smell of them. One bar we went into last year served us the beers wrongly but we knew our beers and they had to bring us some more and not charge us for the extra ones.

To be honest they all sell different kinds of beers, they are all great and they are all tourist traps! I’m sorry, but you won’t find any “fair” café’s in the medieval centre of Brugge. As long as you stick to drinking beer and DON’T order food this time of the season you’ll be fine. But don’t order moules et frites unless you know for sure many other clients do it as well, or else you’ll be stuck to the toilet the rest of your holiday. Ohh, and don’t eat Gentse Waterzoo too.
