I’ve just read Black Hawk Down, We Were Soldiers and Sharkey Wards SHAR Over The Falklands and am looking for suggestions of what to read next! I’d like to stick with stories of actual wars.

RE: Good books??
Read Panzer Commander by Guderian-great book. Or try MiG Pilot by John Barron-about Belenko’s defection. Of course, there’s always Sun Tzu’s the Art of War.

“Peace through kinetic solutions”

RE: Good books??
For really solid fiction, try Up Country by Nelson DeMille. It concerns a former GI re-visiting Vietnam on a strange murder investigation 20 years after he served there during the war. Strong storyline and an unusual theme – like every DeMille, just brilliant.

RE: Good books??
You should try ‘Total War 2006’ written by Simon Pearson who is a former Buccaneer and Tornado navigator and became later on flight commander of 12 sq at Lossiemouth.
In short the book gives a good idea of possible wars to come. NATO deals with a United Islamic World lead by some sort of Osama Bin Laden. BTW the book was written in 1999 thus before the september 11 events.

PS ; in the book the author predicts that France won the Worldcup in 2002. As you can see soccer is as difficult to predict as futur worldconflicts.

RE: Good books??
Thanks squasher… I’ll look out for them! After Chickenhawk I’ve got Douglas Baders life story lined up “Reach For The Sky” by Paul Brickhill.

GZYL,
if you like well reseached books giving actual accounts of action, then you cant go wrong with Martin Middlebrook’s series of books. Absolutely stunning research. For example the man can write a 300 page book about one bombing mission alone !.
Currently I am reading Wolfpack – Hunting Migs over Vietnam by Jerry Scutts – good book to read.!

RE: Good books??
GZYL,
I’ve read all three of those as well. I think ‘we were soldiers…’ is an excellent read, it is a superb example of the literature to come out of the Vietnam war. Vietnam is a special interest area of mine. There are many brilliant books both factual and fictional on Vietnam so here are a few suggestions.
Factual- Low level hell by Hugh Mills about helicopter ops, Fox Two about an F4 ace (think it’s Cunningham) and the Battle of Long Tan by McAulay which is about the Australians.
Fictional- anything by James Webb, Going after Cacciato by Tim O’Brien, the 13th valley by Mark del Vecchio. Of the Webb books, Fields of Fire is, IMHO a classic.
If you’re looking for WWII there were a lot of paperback biographies published in the 50’s and 60’s and these are often available now for less than a pound.
For the pure joy of flight try Biplane, Stranger to the Ground and Nothing by Chance by Richard Bach. His fantasies are also well worth reading such as Illusions (the confessions of a reluctant messiah), Jonathan Livingstone Seagull and There’s no such place as far away.
Hope this gives you a start but I can think of plenty more.
