I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of the Blackburn Buccaneer Society, to wish Kemble Air Services the very best of British, as they head off to Cotswold District Council tomorrow for the begining of a three day planning enquiry.
The enquiry will weigh up evidence from both KAS Ltd and CDC, before deciding whether air traffic should end at the historic airfield.

It doesn’t just happen here.

”Maybe so, but because of the skyrocketing growth over the last few years, change is coming to the private aeronautical community, one of about 475 in the country.
More and more of the recent residents have no interest in flying. They bought for an investment or because it’s one of the few places with large lots or simply because it’s so green and the Wellington mall is so near. Some of the newcomers live on the perimeter and have no access to taxiways or the runway. Flying simply wasn’t on the list of reasons to buy at Aero Club.
That has caused friction. They grumble about the noise. A few have suggested curfews.
“I believe you should be a pilot or an aviation enthusiast if you want to live here,” says Green, whose real estate investments finance his airplane hobby. “You don’t have to be a pilot, but (you have to) love airplanes. If you complain about airplane noise, get out of here. You don’t belong here.”
Damn right !

I totally agree with you. I’m sure there are no way near as many jets there as when it was RAF.
True enough, but there are far more of the “upwardly mobile” and “upwardly vocal” minority now living round and about than there were then….:diablo:
And the local council no doubt see it as a prime brown-field site which they could turn into one of the trendy eco-friendly business parks that seem to be popping up everywhere, possibly generating them more business rate revenue, possibly bringing future employment opportunities to the area, but almost certainly boosting their green credentials by getting shot of those noisy, fossil fuel burning, rich boys’ “toys” that upset some of the more well heeled, and thus more influential, local residents.
As has been said, Kemble, North Weald… how long before Duxford and others become targets of similar campaigns, where many agenda(s, ae?) can be cleverly hidden behind a few “complaints about noise”.

By all accounts Kemble is a very active and popular airfield and must surely be an asset to the local eceonomy and community.
With flying there since 1938, how come it has only now become an issue?
I know I’m a terrible cynic but am I the only one wondering if this action is possibly paving the way for future development of the site?

er…no, move next to an airfield, don’t be surprised to see and hear aircraft – if I moved to Slough could I demand the M4 be closed because of noise?
These days anything seems possible – saw in the Daily Telegruff earlier this week a that a couple had moved out of the big smoke, and bought a twee cottage in a pretty Devon village (IIRC). Their new home is sited across the village green from the village church. They are now seeking to get the church bells silenced from 9:00pm to 7:00am every day, as the noise was disturbing them:mad: 😡 😡 .
Surely they had spotted the Church when the looked around their dream home? Didn’t it occur to them that the church might have bells? If not, then it suggest they didn’t spend much time inspecting their prospective puchase before they bought it….
So, Maple 01 , the old adage of “buyer beware” , and the use of common sense seems to have fallen by the wayside these days…. So why not start a campaign to get the M4 shut between say 9:00pm and 7:00am if it’s disturbing your ZZ’s 😀

totally agree. Mr Burke, go and have a lie down, then come and join the enthusiasts! 🙂

This has been reviewed on previous Kemble threads but the enforcement notice was issued as the council consider that the ‘general aviation’ flying activities were being carried out unlawfully as the established use of the place was, in their opinion, storage and servicing of aircraft. If that view prevails at enquiry cessation of general aviation activities would result and an application for a change of use would be required. The council do not believe its acceptable to simply argue that this is an airfield, so we fly from it, it is the nature of the flying and the associated activities that is at issue here.

surely the problem lies with the large aircraft IE airliners flying in an out, which i understand is a fairly recent development? hunters etc dont make as much noise as a 747 do they??

The last paragraph concerns me most…..
Have just read the report linked…. and it bothers me that the following paragraph exists at the end:
<< CDC’s development control manager Kevin Field said after the inquiry: “Cotswold District Council has decided to withdraw the enforcement notice and to replace it with one which accords with the inspector’s comments. The new notice is likely to be served in the near future.” >>
I have a personal link to Kemble, and absolutely love the place…
I have heard from those that work there, and some who live there too, and the whole debacle is something that bugs me.
One can only hope for some common sense to prevail in the end…PLEASE?

Maple – don’t assume that everyone who lives next door to an airfield has just moved there – the person I spoke to had lived in the area for probably half the life of the airfield.
As an aside there have been cases where the complainants of aircraft noise
have actually been pilots themselves.

Congrats Kemble, belive me it wont be long before they try with North Weald again
By: multivac - 27th November 2007 at 19:29
Reading the article from beginning to the end, I’m left feeling that the council will try again and the proceedings only stopped because the council’s case went “tech” by not following the rules.
I’ve got my fingers still crossed. Good luck Kemble.
Makes me wonder which airfield is next on the nimby’s list. Look out Duxford, North Weald, Coventry etc.

I think you need to step away and look at both sides of the arguement.

This is great news – a rare piece of common sense in todays world – woohoo! 😀
By: BlueRobin - 27th November 2007 at 17:52
By the way you only need to look at Coventry airport to see local councils don’t lie down; I doubt this is truly over.
By: David Burke - 27th November 2007 at 17:50
I think you need to step away and look at both sides of the arguement. I was working in the area last year and managed to speak to a local who wasn’t a ‘Nimby’ . From his comments of aircraft operation the concerns seemed to be related to jet aircraft operation and specifically noise from that.
I hope the airfield operators view their operations and help to minimise it’s impact on the local community as I don’t see this being a problem that will go away in many parts of the U.K.

Good news!
That’s a relief that things can continue at Kemble:cool:

Kemble guys have just returned from the meeting and have just reported on UKAR that the enforcement order has been withdrawn, so they are cleared to continue as they are!! Hooray – well done everyone!!:D
