Just thought it might be of interest to some of you who are thinking of joining the industry, or like myself are currently training, BA have started recruiting direct entry pilots again! They are taking on guys and girls with previous experience on the A320, 777 and 747!
While this may not apply directly to us wannabe’s, it means that some spaces at the lo-cos, charters and regionals will be freed up. Hopefully this will see the start of a real recruitment period!

The ‘pilot market’ has been very busy for the past few months, to the point we have started taking on non-type rated people, to replace folks who are leaving. In fact we have a groundschool running at the moment, with some of the folks only having 250 hours, despite us not actually expanding.
But the industry still has a massive over-capacity issue, especially in the lo-cost sector, so it is entirely possible that one or more UK carriers may downsize within the next couple of years.

Strange, what did you say Allen?
With regards to the cadet scheme I have it on very good authority from three seperate parties at BA that they are unlikely to restart this anytime soon, if at all. There is a huge number of unemployed pilots at the moment, and since 9/11 most wannabe’s are now in the mind set that the only way to make it to the right hand seat is to pay your own way. It’s a sad fact, but sponsorship as we know it is dead.

Well this sounds good, but any news (or ideas) when they might start their cadet sponsorship scheme again? I don’t think they’ve run it for years, and I think they’re running into trouble with the amount of pilots retiring and not enough coming up the line to replace them. Cadet sponsorship maybe one of the only ways I’ll be able to get into the right-hand seat, and hopeully it picks up again with all the numerous airlines that offered such schemes before 9/11.
I’m with you entirely on that and am in the exact same situation. Although, martin has brought me round to thinking that the APP at Oxford may not be as out of reach as I first thought.
