Goodbye SWISS MD-11's

For those who are interested, today was the last flight of a SWISS MD-11. It was a 90- minute round trip of the Swiss Air Space. I recieve the SWISS MD-11 DVD last week, and to be honest, i’ve grown fond of it! I saw a few in ZRH in August sitting in the wild on the apron. Here are a few links to the last flight. I always got the feeling that the MD11 was merely a partially updated version of the DC10, hurridly built in a last ditch attempt to strengthen brand loyalty to MDD among its loyal customers (Finnair, Swissair etc). At the time of its introduction, the A330, A340 and 777 were all under development and MDD knew that these machines would be light years ahead of the MD11 in virtually all respects. I don’t think it’s unreasonable to say that the MD11 was wholly significant of the state of MDD at that time and may even have partly been responsible for MDD’s eventual takeover by Boeing.

This would be an aircraft i would loathe flying on, it has a long history of dangerous incidents and was designed with a pitch instability for better fuel economy, which is unacceptable- scarificing safety for performance in a passenger aircraft.

Very sad to see that the MD11 has gone from the Swiss fleet, I read a great report of the last flight on a.net last night.

So what if it was a disaster PAX wise, doesent mean we cant say farewell to such a great looking machine.

Of course it hasnt totally gone yet anyway

I guess that the failure comes more from marketing and performance issues.

Yeah, but I guess Boeing did more improvemts on the 737/747 as MDD did with the MD 11/MD 90. What helped Boeing in opposit to MDD was that they had also medium airliners like the 757/767, while MDD only had one narrow body and one long haul wide body and nothing in between.
Anyway sad that MDD is gone.
