Goodwood Festival of Speed

Did anyone see the Mk19, Mk8 & P51 from Filton flying the photo shoot this morning at Goodwood & with a C130 in the lead ??
When they came back to Filton they did a stunning run & break in formation for us, well done lads!
Makes all the hard work worthwhile!
Cheers
Geoff

Should be in the papers tomorrow………………. 😮 wonder what they will make of that!

My parents’ neighbour had a gull-wing 300SL in 1958/9 and I had a ride in it….never forget it!!:highly_amused:

I am not bothered by cars as such as vehicles ,to me they are a means of getting from A- B and doing things i want to do BUT i do appreciate good lines, shapes, looks and the aesthetic side of things from an art point of view 🙂

The design of the first Blue car ,looks like the DeLorean doors and that blue is just WOW.
I like the shot of the low down view of the yellow car ,i guess i would worry about the bills to run them :).

Septic

Methinks cornering may be an optional extra with that one.

It looks to me that a cover has been put over the cockpit of the S6b. Not sure though.

Babs was the car that decapitated Parry Thomas when the drive chain broke. It was dug up by Owen Wyn Owen (suspect he may be slightly Welsh) in the mid sixties and restored over many, many years.

I think the Goodwood sculptures are stunning but like many others I’m not happy about priceless exhibits being displayed in that way.

Wasn’t Babs the car that killed Parry Thomas at Pendine when the drive chain broke, was buried for many years then dug up and restored? I think someone was mentioning this on the thread about airframes involved in fatal crashes.

I agree heartily with all those unhappy with the hanging of National Treasures at Goodwood. My worry, as well as the stress on the airframe of the S6, is that both it and Bluebird have open cockpits, and surely it must have rained since they were hung?

Thanks JDK, Manonthefence, warbirduk I’m glad you liked the pics

To be honest though the photos don’t do the ‘sculpture’ justice. The scale of it was awesome. I kept getting drawn back to the sculpture throughout the day, as a preservationist a heart I did have some concerns with the display, but no more than I have for a vintage aircraft displaying in less than ideal weather.

Goodwood and Rolls Royce should be aplauded for the S6 and Bluebird display. Both will now go back to gathering cobwebs.

For the aero engine enthusiast there was also the sight and sound of Babs powered by a Liberty V12.

Gosh I seem to have started something here………
1- I’m not against the sculpture aesthetically – in fact I quite like it, but…..
2 – I was more concerned about leaving such a priceless artifact exposed to the vagaries of the British climate – IIRC wasn’t the fabric on an RAFM airframe severely damaged by hail on Horse Gaurds Parade in 1968
3 – despite the “safe” suspension what sort of unusual stresses were applied to the airframe by the nose down display, and finally
4- would anybody have realised it wasn’t an original if they had made a replica????

.

Does anyone know the last time either a S6 was displayed out in the open

Septic

Septic

Well one of them was on open display on the top of the Queens Building at London Airport as then was, when security was such that the public had free access to watch the flying. That would be late 1950’s.

If pushed I could find a negative

Leaving aside the fact the two priceless historic items were possibly “put at risk” (at the very least left out in the British attempt at a summer), the sculpture is stunning and Septic’s pictures leave me almost speechless. Stunning mate simply stunning

I await with interest whether this is the thin end of the wedge. I have to say they kept it very quiet beforehand though.

Still good news for the SHoA

Fair enough Dez,

But Septic’s pics do show an angle (pun intended) on the S-6 we’d otherwise not have got. Variety is the spice of life etc, etc.

Nice pics Septic, BTW. Thanks for sharing…

Cheers / Salut

Ruined??!!!

What i ment was that there significance is sort of lost within the Sculpture

Difficult to explain what i mean its just that they look more like ‘after thoughts’ all hanging there in fact they sort of look crucified??!!????

The focus of the sculpture doesn’t seem to be them??!!! Sorry if this makes no sense! v.tired and naff day…roll on legends…
