hey started another one as I though this one needed a fresh page.
This pic is from the IMDS-2005 (cortesy Igorrr) which shows an air-wing of 14 (2 lower than what the sketch have) and thats speaks good enough from the 12 earlier said.
I also believe that the 12 Hariers (one crashed just a day ago) will also be complementing the MiG-29K on the Gorshkov ….
Also, lete me post this article too here, which many had already read (i guess)
Acquired Russian aircraft carrier to arrive in 2008
MUMBAI, DEC 1 (PTI)
India’s second aircraft carrier Admiral Gorshkov, acquired from Russian Navy, was expected to arrive in Mumbai in the first half of 2008, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of Western Naval command, Vice-Admiral Madanjit Singh said here today.
The carrier has undergone several modifications and has been fitted with some Indian equipment, Singh said.
After a year’s trials in Russia, the carrier is expected to arrive here in first half of 2008, he said.
“The India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier was expected to be ready within eight years. By then, we expect the naval version of LCA to be ready,” he added.
The Navy was creating an operational base for UAVs (Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) near Porbunder in Gujarat, he said adding, land has already been acquired for the project.
The Navy was also evaluating ship-launched version of UAVs, he said.
Asked about China building a new aircraft carrier, Singh said the neighbouring country had improved shipbuilding capabilities.
“Their nuclear submarine programme is a cause of worry for the US,” he added.
Post-September 11 terror attacks in US, the focus now was on low intensity conflict, electronic warfare and sea piracy, Singh said and added that Indian Navy was gearing up to face these challenges.
And the things to be noted is whats been underlined — thats the contract was sined in Jan 2004 and by end 2oo6 end or early 2007 the ship is going to hit water, which means the Gorshkov after ‘retiring’ from Russian service is going to hit water after thorough modernisation in 2 years FLAT! …. thats something to cheer, coz i believe many in the forum had predicted many dates like 2009 or something. But the year 2007 wud be the testing time and the time for everyone to keep their fingers crossed so as to see that any defeciencies come out and everything is made fine for smooth sailing in future.
So come 2007 and shall we expect pics of Gorshkov testing water to come out (?) ….BTW, have anyone got info as to which turbines the Gorshkov be fitted???
I’d have loved to see the M-90 powering it, Hope the Russians had dusted off ….
Harry, plz do excuse for the Carrier name, u can change the name Gorshkov after it hits the water … hope till then u guys can carry on with a name which have almost become a house-hold name, tks for the long years which took it for the deal to be signed …

I am hoping for a combination of shtil-1 and Barak-2. If what they say about the range of barak-2 (70-80) km is true, then it would provide a decent air defence. Of course adding a few S-300 would be even better but might be wistful thinking.
If you have Barak 2 installed, adding Shtil 1 is just a waste of space and weight as the former missile would be superior to the latter in terms of range and – probably – guidance. Besides, I expect Barak 2 to be more compact and lighter than Shtil 1. Putting S-300 on this carrier makes no sense as this would take up even more space and weight, not just for the missile launchers but also for the Tombstone radar director(s). Instead of the Russian approach, which has carriers armed like a cruiser, India follows the ‘western pattern’ of carrier armament: light and purely for self-defense, much like a frigate. Medium and long range SAMs are then placed on escorting dedicated air defense destroyers/frigates

It has somewhere been suggested that it would have Shtil-1 in VLS mode, but they also mentioned “carrousel” launchers, which makes that report rather unreliable… I think it mentioned 4 8-cell launchers or something like that.
I honestly think for Kashtan too, although it was also mentioned that Kashtan was refused by India, but as Russia did not want to incorporate Barak, I am not sure what will be installed. I guess we’ll see in a few years.
IN is perfectly capable of installing Barak itself, see current carrier.

Defensive probably Shtil-1 or Barak-2 (maybe later). I doubt it will carry any offensive missiles other than on aircrafts. The standard Kh-31p/a and KH-35 with sea eagle for Mig-29k/NLCA/Harrier.
Judging from the models, don’t expect much more than either a couple of Kashtan’s or a Barak/AK630 combo on board the Gorshkov.

What defensive (and offensive) weapons is Gorsckhov going to be armed with?
By: Ja Worsley - 12th March 2006 at 13:02
Hahahaha That’s Funny, 711 for an Indian ship. May as well have called it Quick-E-Mart 😀
Sorry guys, I have a weird sence of Humour, I mean no offence to anyone!

It says Gorshkov on the bow to me… Russia doesn’t rename stuff before it enters service in the customer’s Navy.
All ships built in Russia, receive a Russian name and number during trials (Talwar for example was called Dozorniy with the pennant number 711). Only after hand over they are repainted and renamed. So Vikramaditiya will only be called like that when she enters service in IN.

The navy was speculating with INS Gorshkov for a while before settling on Vikramaditya
By: rickusn - 11th March 2006 at 17:40
Gorshkov has been renamed: INS Vikramditya
Or do I understand you want her to be named INS Gorshkov?

After spending the last few months being frustrated with a lack of new Varyag images from Dailan its nice to see the Gorshkov in refit.
It looks like she is in the very early stages as she hasn’t even finished the strip down yet.
the work starts from the inside ….. just like our own boady ….. ur face/body can be changed with a Plastic Surgery, but to “re-wire” ur blood vessels and clean ur inside is the main part ……
Gradient, nice fine man ….. really nice to see Gorshkov after sooo long 🙂
and hope she get renamed (as what was proposed first) as INS Gorshkov 😎

Before and After Refit
If you look at the image below you can see the before and after images of the Gorshkov refit.
The deck area will be significantly increased including a longer and wider bow top to allow for the Ski Jump.
The green area on the top image is the area to be added onto the Gorshkovs deck.
By: swerve - 11th March 2006 at 10:41
The bow clearly curves up into a Ski-Ramp………….at least from all the pictures and drawings that I’ve seen.
It will have a ski-jump when the rebuilding is complete, but it hasn’t been buiilt yet. The current flight deck (the one it was originally built with) doesn’t extend to the bow. That was full of missile launchers. What you see in the photographs is just the rake. You need to see a photo from above, showing the foredeck, to see the difference.
By: Arabella-Cox - 11th March 2006 at 04:52
Huh? Are you talking about the rake of the bow? There is no ski ramp on there at the moment and the models etc don’t show the intended ramp as extending beyond the bow.

well well with the nukular deal signed and India being a “strategic partner” and all that, its time for India to ask US cos to bid on a steam capapult system and a steam plant driven by bled energy from gas turbine plants of the type ADS-2 are likely to have. and pls make it fit inside a hull of 50kt.
the CDG with two cats can hurl twice the number of heavier a/c in a emergency compare to single ski jump on gorshkov and ADS-1.
It is time, gentlemen – to kick some serious a.. 😡

Note how far the Ski-Ramp extents over the bow! While I am not a big fan of the ex-Russian Carrier. I have to say she is a impressive looking ship! 😀

Very Nice Pics………………….Now all she needs is a couple squadrons of F-35’s! 😀 IMO

Her Sonar’s gone allright.
No Yasen for the moment as Gorshkov is in front of her hangar. Must be hard to get her out then 🙂
Stripping has gone some way, they’re probably doing some structural changes first. It’s cold outside there you know. And if you’d work on the outside first, you have more danger that your work is already degraded by the weather. Better do the inside first, then go to the outside, when it’s summer.
