So well will this mean no more Gorshkov? no CDS? no Trishul or SCorpenese? and no PAK-FA? or even the MCA?

ISLAMABAD: India and Pakistan have reportedly given the green signal to those involved with Track-II diplomatic initiatives to look for ways to reduce defence expenditures.

“The two sides will soon discuss three major issues – reduction in defence budgets, signing of a nuclear restraint and stabilisation regime and promotion of trade ties between the two countries,” the Dawn newspaper quoted former Pakistan Foreign Secretary Niaz A Naik as saying.

Expressing the hope that an initial understanding on the three major issues would lead to a resolution of the Kashmir dispute, Naik said that the 22nd meeting of the Track-II diplomats would be held here from January 18-22.

“We have proposed a common currency to be named as Rupa by 2010 for India and Pakistan , and we are receiving an encouraging response from both governments,” he said, adding that it would be a freely convertible currency, which would be launched with the support of the World Trade Organisation.

He said the groundwork for the five-day meeting would be completed by January 2 when Rehman and Haroon Subhan would arrive here from New Delhi. Pakistan’s former Finance Minister Babar Ali has been asked to coordinate with the two guests.

Naik also confirmed that a ten-member Indian delegation headed by India’s former Foreign Secretary M K Rasgotra would be arriving in Islamabad for talks.

The delegation, he said, would include former army general Vohra, Admiral (retd) Nair, Commodore (retd) N B Singh, George Verges of The Times of India , Raja Mohan of The Hindu , Meenakshi Gopinath, Babhani Sengupta and two other members.
