Grahame White Factory, Hendon – 03Dec09

Prior to heading off to RAF Northolt for a night photo shoot, I call in first at the RAF Museum at Hendon to hone my long exposure photography skills. Thursday the 3rd December was no different. Normally I arrive mid to late morning so don’t get to go around the Grahame White Factory. This visit I arrived for doors open and spent about 90 minutes wandering around. I was using my 11-18mm wide angle lens and one thing I did find out was that with the low level angle shots there was a fair mount of flaring, or spots of light, from the roof lights appearing in the most inappropriate places on the image. The lens does have a small hood so I’ll probably have to hold my hand or use some other form of shading to stop the light from hitting the lens.

Technical Bits.

The same principles of night shooting can be used for museum photography. Camera on a tripod, remote shutter release or camera timer used, flash off, ISO set at 100, Aperture priority with the F number in double digits for a depth of field and shoot in RAW. I have the AF Area on Spot and use Continuous Focus

The Pup certainly isn’t a replica, it shot down two German aircraft during the First World War.

Its originality was certainly dicussed when it was first passed to the RAF Museum by Doug Arnold in exchange for a Spitfire. It seems only to have been accepted as “an original” some time after its completion – previously it had been described as a replica. The CAA only changed this after reciept of a letter from Tommy Sopwith. Interestingly the RAFM itself decribes it as ” The completed aircraft is supposedly 60-70% original, or at least contemporary, components”

From what i’ve heard, it’s the property developer’s who have been building on the ex-airfield site that have been delaying it – last I heard before this was that it was to be turned into a pub where it currently is

Replicas are:

Sopwith Pup
Vichers Vimy
Vickers FB5 Gunbus
Bristol M1C
Sopwith Tabloid
Sopwith 1 1/2 Strutter.
BE2

The Bristol Fighter is a partial replica based around one of the Weston on the Green frames.

The rest are originals. Mostly ex RAeS Nash Collection, purchased subsequently by the RAFM.

The Hanriot HD1 is ex Richard Shuttleworth. I think it’s a shame the RAFM didn’t loan it to Old Warden when the LVG was returned. Seems the right place for it.

Some are, some aren’t.

Excellent set of photos, though. What’s the monoplane just before the last SE5a picture?
