Grave photo request

I am reseraching a Lancaster crash that happened on 17th May 1945, (Lanc RF124, LE-S)with the loss of all seven crewmen. I have all the crew photos and ages, however, I need one age for one of the crewmen…

He was Sgt 1813035 Vincent Reginald Woodburn SOUTHWORTH

CWGC info is that he is buried in Watford North cemetery Hertfordshire Sec A Cons Grave 1213…..The post code for the cemetery is WD25 0RJ….

Would like to know his age (date of birth) and if possible a picture of his final resting place

Can anyone who lives nearby do me the honours please?

Kindest regards
Graham

Contrary to popular believe, TWGPP holds a fair amount of private headstones for deceased servicemen. Not only CWGC stones.

Could be Kev

Strange though that twgpp show that they have a photograph and details of Southworth..

Looks like I may have to dig my lead lined money-box out of its nuclear attack proof 55 foot concrete covered resting place at the bottom of my garden and pay twgpp for the photo…Arghhhhh.

It could be that you are not actually looking for a CWGC headstone, it is possible that the family had him interred in a family plot with no input from CWGC.

Drat and triple drat,
Despite Halcyon days very best efforts, he was unable to locate the grave.

So if anyone else is passing?
Kindest regards to Halcyon Days

BMD – Births, Marriages, Deaths
records held by the GRO – General Records Office.
Most main libraries hold copies of these records on microfiche.

i.e..

‘Hatched, Matched & Despatched”

Graham.

I use a website called FREE BMD which is reasonably easy to use. Unless you get a copy of the birth certificate I guess you won’t be able to confirm whether he was 19 or 20 at the time of his death. Being buried in Watford would suggest that that was the family home at that time. Therefore it might be worth you contacting the Local Archive:

http://www.hertsdirect.org/services/leisculture/heritage1/hals/

If, as they seem to suggest, they hold newspaper archives for the area, it might be worth contacting them to see if they have either death notices or an article about his death in the press. It might just confirm his age one way or the other for you.

BMD = Births Marriage & Deaths .Try Google for “Find my Past” or a BMD site .Most are free but you pay for sending for a certificate

BMD records have a Vincent R Southworth born in the June quarter of 1925 (April, May or June) and the birth registered in the Paddington District. Mother’s name was Dillam. The reference should you require a birth certificate is Paddington Volume 1a page 4. Other than that we can’t narrow it down any further than his being 19 or 20 depending on whether his birthday was prior to or after the crash.

Edited because I clearly haven’t got a clue how to do a search on TWGPP. I have used them in the past and found them very accommodating.

I have an enthusiast colleague in Watford. I will ask him.

Many thanks……That would be brilliant if a date of birth can be identified.

As with all things in researching these aviation heroes it’s just great to know who they were and where they were from.

I will have a play with the links, cheers.

Kev,

I don’t think your search engine skills have anything to do with it. The search engine appears to show 0 results when e.g. correcting a typo in a name in the search data. I find that returning to the main search menu first before trying again always gives a result, as opposed to trying again after a fail or partial mismatch of search data. Must be the software I presume?
