Following my last posting on “Does it realy matter”, got me thinking, I remember that just about anything once purchased was labelled as “Made in “GREAT BRITAIN” very rarely seen nowadays, WHY?, is it us, the Government, or the way the world is in general, but to me, we do seem to have lost our way in many areas.
What are YOUR views on this, Have we gone down the crapper or not?.

When he first came about I thought he was the Messiah when the Yanks & most of the world were kneeling down to him….Turns out the best he can do is compare the BP oil leak with 9/11…Typical Yanks, eh? they spend billions to invade countries, fight wars & get people killed for oil & think nothing of it, the Brits come along and dump a load of it on their doorstep for free & they moan to the heavens about it. Tssk! :diablo:
The thing I cant understand is, they have three oil rigs with the same problem, with the same faulty valves, Obama isn’t shouting his mouth off about those though!! The rig, as I understand it, was made in the USA, placed on site by the Yanks, and B.P. just drill for the oil, surely the people responsible for the failing to maintain these faulty valves, is the Yanks themselves, not B. P. but come the next war we get dragged into by the USA, all will be forgiven, YEH, and if you believe we won’t, what planet are you on?.;)

We can’t even keep the customer support centres in this country any longer – employ “Gary”, “Bob” or “David” in Bangalore or Mumbai to answer your questions or solve your problems, and you get someone with a degree wiling to work for a daily Tiffin box ……
Crazy……

Sadly this country’s gone from being a great manufacturing country to a mere shadow of what it once was. The aircraft companies, shipyards, motor manufacturers, all decimated. I can only speak of Hull, my nearest big city, as an example. After the death of the fishing industry there, the only thing really keeping that place on its feet is docks and the caravan industry. And that’s scratching to survive…
It does make me sad to see how we seem to have to rely on other countries nowadays. Something that always strikes me is if you look at 50’s, 60’s even to an extent 70’s photos of any given large town, 99% of the vehicles in it are made in this country. If you took an equivalent photo today, you’d struggle to pick out more than a couple made by a British owned company I reckon.
But I love the fact that the Victor has a plaque on the cockpit step which says simply‘MADE IN ENGLAND’
A reminder that we could, once…
Hi Graham, it makes me wonder if WE still own the U.K. or some other Country, perhaps after the required 30yrs, we may know.

Well, I have an air rifle with ‘Made In Great Britain’ (Or England to be more accurate) proudly stamped on the side of it. Its from a company called; Brocock, & the model I have from them is called a Concept, in .22 cal. its a fine bit of kit and according to many sources, us Brits produce to finest air rifles in the world….
It pains me to say it but I think Weihrauch make the best air rifles. The best Ive had anyway.
There are manufacturers out there in Britain who just need some help. Look at Sheffield Forgemasters. Full order books including major contracts for producing nuclear power plant parts. They need goverment investment but Nick says no. Or was it David told Nick to say no
Hi Kev. We are even importing coal TO Newcastle from Germany.

Market forces – it cost companies less to shift manufacturing to places where factories pay their workers pennies and are less prone to union action. The companies are to blame if anyone is in the pursuit of higher and higher profits. The government may be held responsible for allowing what were once British companies to be snapped up by foreign buyers – Land Rover, Jaguar, Cadburys etc.
I can remember the “Buy British” campaign back in the 60’s or 70’s – there is no way such a campaign could be run today.

Don’t get me started on Indian call centres in Mumbai. I had just picked up a brand new car, 20 mins later whilst on the way home, I fell foul to a concrete mixer lorry which shed loose hard concrete on the road, and the bonnet, both front wings damaged. I was with Norwich Union at the time, and told them I was making a claim. I gave them the lorry reg etc, BUT found out it was being dealt with by a call centre in Mumbai, for 11, yes 11 months of calling them in India, I was pushed from pillar to post, none of them could understand half of what I was saying to them and as such, passed me to another dept. Still having contacts in the Force I had retired from, I traced the owners, and sorted it out myself. The cheeky sods then, come time for renewal then sent me a quote to stay with them.
My reply would be struck off by the Mods on the forum, but you can guess my reply in no uncertain terms.I will not deal with ANY Companies now that have out of the U.K. call centres.

Yes, probably not much to go on but how many countries have something thats produced/made abroad? pretty much all of them. Even Americas main battle tank is as American as Obama is an Irishman.

Hi G.A. thanks for your reply, however are we Brits responsible for selling off many of our assets, in other words, are we ourselves to blame?.

For better or for worse, our economy has changed from being based mainly on manufacturing and exporting to being based mainly on “service industries”.
As a result, we see fewer and fewer goods marked “Made In Britain”.
It’s the way of the world, amigo.
