Great Scoops From Flickr And LIFE Archive

Hi,

I thought it was time to start a thread about those amazing aviation Flickr accounts we all (some of us anyway) stumble across from time to time, or great pictures from the LIFE Archive

I will start with a great collection of almost 1200 black and white photos from the 50s and 60s. All pictures are uploaded in very high resolution. This collection is a Mecca for connoisseurs of early military jets, but there are goodies for everyone. The account holder, known as Aeroman3, has kindly posted all pictures as public domain (they are mostly USAF/USN images anyway and thus public domain by default).

Please feel free to post your Flickr findings – I have plenty more to post along the way.

Going back to the Wright Brothers photo. I had always assumed that Wilbur might have been holding the wingtip steady – as with a glider in the initial moments of an aerotow.

As said – there is so much in that photograph

Palouste starter unit.

Interesting piccie of the Palouste Starter unit. Our Royal Navy Palouste’s had a drop down exhaust panel ie. Sea Vixen, no doubt still in use ? We mounted ours ( 892 Sqdn. ) on carrier deck tugs, for multi starting of A/C on deck.

I know this is not news to many, but if you ‘ctrl +’ or ‘ctrl – ‘ you can expand and contract the webpage on view (great for detailed viewing of photos).
