GREAT VINTAGE FLYING WEEKEND
Friday May 26th – Monday May 29th
The Tenth Anniversary event will be held At Keevil Airfield, Wilts over the Bank Holiday Weekend of Friday May 26th to Monday May 29th.
This former RAF aerodrome (built in 1942) was originally intended for fighter training but was then redesigned to full ‘bomber’ status with THREE large hard runways.
In the end it found diverse roles with the USAAF, Spitfire assembly and, most importantly, with Airborne Forces for Overlord and Market Garden.
It is located just outside the village of Steeple Ashton about four miles east of Trowbridge, off the A430 Warminster-Chippenham for visitors by road.
We are of course sorry to be unable to return to Hullavington as we intended after this year’s deluges but, despite everyone’s best efforts, it was simply not possible to fit in with the operations of the very active VGS Units. We remain hopeful of reaching an agreement for another year.
Note too the shift in date(s). This is due to a mix of key staff availability and ‘airfield cropping’ — but it also provides valuable extra daylight for return flights and spreads the dreaded ‘weather risk’ over the three full days.
Information and invitations (for G-VFWE itself and our other events) to pilots and to traders were mailed, as usual, immediately after the Xmas holiday.
Any pilots who would like to attend G-VFWE 2006 and are not yet on our mailing list can pre-register online by visiting:

hence the chewed up surface in places.
All those propellors didn’t help . . .

Just 16 in today (Monday)
Sunday was great, though, and I hope the organisers are encouraged to do another one next year. Surely they must be luckier with the weather…..
Keevil seems a very nice little field, and up to now a bit of an unknown factor. Apparently the RAF take Hercs in for tactical training, and fling LandRovers out the back , hence the chewed up surface in places.

We got as far as Kemble before we decided discretion was the better part of valour, and put down there. By the time the cloudbase had lifted there wasn’t much point carrying on, so we headed home. A real shame considering last years similar conditions.
Tom.

The weather down here in Cornwall has been, shall we say terrible. Hopefully after looking at the forecasts today, we are hoping to go tomorrow and at the worst on Monday.
I will set off for Eggesford tomorrow morning to see how things are there.
Its such a great shame after last year, but one thing you cant book is the weather.
Best wishes,
Martin
Martin,
The weather forecast for tomorrow is greatly improved, so I’ll look out for you at Keevil.

So any intrepid optimists bought a weekend ticket for £25.00?? 😮
By: Propstrike - 27th May 2006 at 12:34
As at 10.30 this morning, the total was one arrival.
However…
Altogether now.
”The sun ‘ll come out, tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar that tomorrow
There ‘ll be sun
Just thinking about tomorrow
Clears away the cobwebs and the sorrow.”…… etc.

Fatnav,
What will you be bringing? Coming from Haverfordwest?
Fingers crossed for Sunday.

Forecast is definitely better for Sunday. That’s when I hope to fly in.

If the weather would have been fine as we speak, I would have been on my way. Saturday doesnt look that tempting, but Sunday looks to be a better day, so will probably go then. Got my tent and everything packed, just need something to go in.
See you there!
Martin

Weather looking a bit tricky for Saturday, but Sunday might be OK, and then there is Monday as well……….
Lets just hope it will not be swamped like Hullavington last year.
