I’ve recently been going through a pile of postcards and greetings cards that my mother has accumulated and thought a few of them might be of interest to this forum. The first is a Christmas card from the Essex Regiment, 3rd Battalion. Here is the front cover, rather plain apart from the regiment’s crest and battle honours, and with a green and red ribbon attached.
And here is the inside. I don’t know who Ernie is – my great uncle Ernie would only have been about 14 at the most in 1916, so it’s unlikely to be from a family member.
Next is another military one, maybe from around Christmas.
And a less than picturesque view of Ypres.
And finally a postcard from Great Yarmouth. The picture on the front is not very interesting, but the message on the back reads “None the worse Today for last night’s experience. It was rather nerve shaking while it lasted and the suspense afterwards worse.” It is postmarked 20th January 1915 and I believe that the text refers to one of the first (if not the first) air raids on England; by the German airship L3.

Unfortunately the handwriting on most of the other postcards I saw was nowhere near as legible!

Outstanding Jetflap, those are really interesting 
Got a few hand-me-downs of my Grand-dads on a similar theme, people of that era have such nice handwriting too, puts many of us to shame.
