My colleague and I are debating what is a good horror film, due to the fact that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre has been remade and will be appearing in cinemas soon, so it prompted me to ask you lot:
What do you think is the greatest horror film ever??
My personal favourite, and my contender for greatest horror film ever, is Jaws.
Outright classic, highest grossing movie for its time, truly unforgettable movie, great performances and score by John Williams.
So, what do you think??

Definitive Dracula – Christopher Lee in the first Hammer treatment of Dracula. Nuff said!
Definitive Frankenstein, actually, is the Kenneth Branagh version. Bob De Niro plays the monster quite well, you genuinely feel sorry for him in parts and it sticks a lot to the original novel.

I thought that the beginning of Alien 3 fudged it slightly – maybe the other actors didn’t want to do it or something but it started on a real downer with just Ripley back again, almost like a contractual obligation… But the circumstance that she was thrown into was – to me – so unusual. Not a great film, not a brilliant film, but nowhere near a complete turkey either. I did think that Alien 4 was a disappointment, especially if there was going to be a sequel because suddenly there are a lot of survivors and they can’t all die in the crash – again!
Anybody care to list their definitive Dracula and Frankenstein? Anyone care to defend Scream and its ilk?

Hands down my favorite, although Event Horizon was pretty damn good as well. The second was an outstanding action movie, the third is decent, but the fourth should be ignored. Interestingly enough, the best one of them all may be the directors cut of the third one, it’ll be released in November in the new box set.
Anyone else psyched about the Alien re-release into theaters? The Alien vs. Predator movie trailer will be shown before it…

Me too, although I was quite a bit older! I still find it hard to watch even now.
Aliens was a great ‘space marines v bugs’ shoot-em up, 3 was crap, 4 was the most thoughtful so far. But the original was definitely the scariest.

It has to be Alien for me. And as a sequel Aliens worked for me, too. Not sure about Alien 3 or 4 – but even then they did have something different about them as compared to the other run of the mill stuck-in-a-space-ship/station/planet-with-a-‘thing’-ripping-everyone-to-bits/shreds/giggles.
To my mind the current genre of teen slashers just seems to be something to carry or make stars of the cast.
Of course the original horror film of 1922, Nosferatu, with its totally innovative touches that no other film has really captured since, just has to take pride of place if for nothing but what has to be the ugliest vampire ever!
Honourable mention to Young Frankenstein for being a great parody, and is it at this point that I mention The Rocky Horror Picture Show?

Funny, I’m watching “Jaws, the revenge” (4) right now, and 3 was on just an hour ago – there’s a Spielberg marathon on TV. The first one was excellent, but the rest are just a waste of time.
“Pet Cemetery”, now there’s one disturbing movie …

I can say that the only movie which really scared me was : “Psycho” from Alfred Hitchcock
