Can anyone give some good stats on this?
I’ve got Greece down with 4 Type-209-100 and 4 Type-209-200 German diesel SSK’s. I am also reliably informed that Greek Navy has got a 10 year production-program to recieve 4 advnaced Type-214 diesel attack subs – one built in Germany and 3 locally. The Type-214 is apparently light years ahead of the 209.
Since Greece has no real plans to retire any of its 209’s, I’m assuming the HN wants to expand its SSK fleet to counter the Turkish increase.
I know Turkey has between 10 and 12 Type-209’s, and has acquired or ordered a small number of additional vessels to supplement this fleet. Currently, Turkey also has a number of more obsolete designs, mainly 60/70’s ex-USN Guppy’s.
Is Turkey planning to get any next-generation subs?
I am of the long, long belief that Cyprus should have gone to buy Russian Sierra-class SSK’s back in the mid 90’s, when the offer was still open. There was no point at all in purchasing SV-III missile boats from Greece, because they’re just sitting ducks for enemy aircraft without credible air cover or a/d assets.
The second option was to totally abandon the Ka-32 Helix procurment (lets face it – the Ka-32 is simply too small for use as a fire-fighter), and instead gone for the Ka-27 as an ASW platform with dipping sonar and torpedoes.

Thanks for the info on the subs. Just to update the info above –
National Guard
enlisted personnel – 2850
conscription personnel – 11000
These figures do not represnt that of the KSA (Kybriaki Stratioki Aeroporia) or the Cyprus Navy, both of which were supposed to have been classified till a couple of years ago, when both services achieved independent status.
Best estimate on the Cyprus Navy is 700-850 men, though the number of officers is not known.

Turkey planned to acquire 6 submarines with local production with foreign partner back in 1998 but since then we all know they have been under severe financial strain with earthquakes in 1999, IMF loans, currency devaluations and economic depression.
Is it wise for Cyprus to buy submarines especially as western goverments are always on about an arms race on the island after the S300 fiasco. And secondly cyprus only has 11000 in armed forces/men so how many can be spared to sail these subs when in a theatre of war they won’t be much use as it will take time to re-fit for war operations and the uncertainty of going to war.
