No excuses for posting yet another Spitfire topic (this is the Spitfire forum isn’t it:eek: )
In Classic Wings it was mentioned that the Greek Spitfire is to be restored to flight status. Will they do this inhouse or will the international Spitfire industry be involved?
Any takers?
Cheers

Hello everybody.
I hope I’m bringing this news first to you.
I am Greek. The Greek Spitfire MJ755 has just left Greece for UK where it will be restored to airworthy status by the Internationla Spitfire industy.
They had informed us that general restoration will require up to 2 years. However, airworthy restoration might take a couple of years more.
The project has been undertaken financially by a Greek benefactor, so many thanks goes to him.
Needless to say, even though it might seem strange to you, the Greek public awaits for this restoration for many-many years now, since the issue was first brought to light, around 2007.
Spitfires as you may know, are very much loved by the Greek public, as the Greek airforce participated on many occassions (especially in Midle East) in WW2 battles, using especially this type of aircraft.
My father told me, that during WW2, spitfires flying over their homes were usually called “The Milkmen”, due to the very early hours they used to be flying.

Hello dear friends
I will try to find out what is the status of the project in Greek (Hellenic Air Force) and hope to give you good news.
Of course we in Greece have economical problems and these gives us a hard time to anything that we try to do but I think that by determination and good willing we wil manage to resume and hopefully finish the very good job allready stared.
Any help will be very much appreciated.

very sweet looking aircraft. far better condition than some that have been restored. Should be a relatively easy job by the looks of things.

Spitfire MkIXc LF MJ755
[…] It was examined by engineers of the non-profitable entity Shuttleworth Collection www.shuttleworth.org and technicians from the Personal Plane Services company. Both agreed that it was in an excellent condition and that after its restoration it will be the most authentic operational example of this type, since it will need the least amount of spare parts in relation to any other Spitfire that flies today. Personnel of the Hellenic Air Force Museum went to the UK where they visited entities that utilize historic aircrafts like The Fighter Collection company and acquired the necessary textbooks through the RAF Museum. […] In the first phase the objective is to be able to start the engine and taxi it on the runway. At a later stage it will be decided whether it is feasible to restore it to flying condition. […]

During a presentation of the ROLLS-ROYCE Merlin 66 engine restoration works, media reported that HAF officer told them that they are using only authentic spare parts of MJ755 itself; he probably meant refurbished parts but media misquoted him.

There’s quite a nice pic in the Osprey book on 43 Sqn, am I seeing things or are they 10″ wheels? 😉

Hello,
I have seen that it has gone a discussion for a while about our Spitfire Mk. IXc LF with MJ 755 numbers and firewall plate CBAF 4484. Our intentions are to examine the aircraft and decide weather it is feasible to bring it in flying condition or not. Would love to know more things about this aircrafts history before it was being delivered to the Royal Hellenic Air Force in 1947.We know that it served with both 32 and 94 sq of the RAF.
It is recorded as being with ‘B’ Flight of 43 Squadron and operational from June through to September 1944.

Construction numbers – MJ755
Cockpit – CBAF IX 1285 and looks right
Fire wall plate – reported as CBAF 4484…and well out of sequence.

I knew it was too easy:D
But the construction numbers of Spitfires is a bit of a difficult subject
isn’t it.
Where’s Mark when you need him:p

Isn’t it legally dangerous wanting to know the serial of a Greek aircraft?
I have no intention of taking pictures……….
