I’m pretty sure Manchester to London is cheaper and faster by rail than plane.

I’ve just had a look at the relative costs of a journey from my home to my employer’s HQ building in London. There’s not a lot in it in terms of overall door-to-door journey time.

Cheapest available tickets between Manchester and London to arrive in London by 10:00 next Tuesday (27th), coming back at 16:40 same day.

BMI MAN – LHR: £97.00 return + tube fare to/from London £9.00 = £106.00.

Virgin Trains Piccadilly Euston (standard return) = £262.00. Add to that the cost of a Zone 1-2 Travelcard and, if you want to be precise, 1/20th of the cost of my monthly local travel ticket to cover the journeys between home and Manchester Piccadilly.

These people have no grasp of what is realy important.

The opposite is actually true. What is really important is indeed to save the whale, ban the bomb and stop pollution.
But, the only one that can draw any sympathy in our money fed world is the Whale. I think we all want that, apart from the Japs.

The Runway will be built in A.N. Other place if not London, so grab it and make money and satisfy the shareholders. That’s short-sighted. The real study should determine properly the future of air travel, the present study assumes a significant growth in Pax numbers, but disregards the seating capacity of airliners is increasing, even on the short haul. As engines become more and more efficient and aircraft become lighter, it becomes possible to make a 100 seat craft with 30 more seats for the same operational expenditure as was the case only 5 years ago.

IMO we should have – still chance to – develop the rail systems for almost all overland travel. The Germans have a new train (Frankfurt to Dusseldorf IIRC) which beats the flying time (Including all the airport checks) by a very significant amount and more people are using the train than the plane. I’m pretty sure Manchester to London is cheaper and faster by rail than plane. Taking all costs and all time into account, and you can use your phone!

If Heathrow does not get the extra runway it needs I am sure there will be another airport in Europe which will expand to accommodate the traffic. The UK needs the money and jobs that will come with the new runway. These people have no grasp of what is realy important.

If they block runways IMHO rev an a/c up send it speeding along towards them, at the last minute turn off down a taxiway and then warn them that next time its taking off :dev2: they’ll soon get the idea :rolleyes:

Anyone else noticed the irony of Greenpeace advertising their ‘Stop the 3rd Heathrow Runway’ campaign here, on an aviation forum, of all places? :diablo:

At least they pay their way, unlike some of the freeloaders who try to advertise on these forums.

In a democracy they have a perfect right to put their point across, just as we have a perfect right call it a load of old tree-hugging hippy twaddle if we see fit to do so.

If you look at the Green Party’s policies , there’s a ‘colour’ shift towards deep Red – in the manner of Michael Foot style ‘Old Labour’ state intervention. However I agree with them about the third runway, if only because by the time it’s built and operational fuel will be so costly that the days of cheap flights and an ever expanding aviation sector will be over. BAA will have to rent it out as a drag strip.

I respect your opinion, Moggy, but would part company with you over doing good stuff. I suppose they mean well in their own terms, as we all do, but the “green” agenda is anathema to me so, for me, they do not even mean well.

They mean well, and do some good stuff, but a lot of their thinking is very muddled
