As no-one else has mentioned it – I thought I’d post it.
My local BBC news here in the south-west of England (near RAF Fairford) showed a clip of a
Greenpeace hot-air balloon that overflew Fairford and dropped leaflets.
The pictures – clearly taken from the balloon – showed it directly above a B-52 at dispersal, and the leaflets dropping on and around it.
From the camera in the balloon’s basket, you could see people on the ground running around trying to
collect the falling leaflets.
I haven’t seen a follow-up story about the balloon’s occupants being arrested, but they were clearly breaking every kind of flight rule by transiting over Fairford in the first place.
Anyone else see the item ? – I am also suprised that I haven’t seen the story on the national news ?
It does beg the question though – what damage could they have done to the B-52 had they dropped
something more lethal than protest leaflets?
I suspect that security is now even tighter around Fairford – but what can they do to stop such an event happening again ?
They can’t patrol every farmer’s field from which a ballon could takeoff – and they certainly would not shoot one down – even if they could!
