G.A. Stated when the Post Census was closed, quote”I remember a time when we used to have interesting and stimulating discussions in here” end quote.
I know there have been times when things have got out of hand, but being a Newby on this forum I cannot comment on the postings that G.A. was referring to. Perchance they were in the distant past, and topics in general have moved on.
So, to try and get something of interest on here, I was wondering if we could share our thoughts on the following.Considering the National Debt is as high as it is, would you sell off some of our National assets to help clear the debt sooner?.

Sunbeam Talbot, now your talking the talk C.D.!!:)

there was only one that i’d considder from that dreadfull stable ( or the TI )
to be fair for a company with unreliable shonky cars lotus probably wasn’t the best pairing !!
By: Creaking Door - 15th March 2011 at 11:59
I had a friend who used to rally a Talbot Sunbeam; he didn’t really slow-down much on the roads either…
…I had my closest ever ‘near-death-experience’ while being driven by him!
Another friend had a Sunbeam with the old Hillman Imp engine in it…..what a piece of ****! :diablo:
By: Lincoln 7 - 15th March 2011 at 11:52
No, the (Peugeot) Ryton Assembly Plant was actually built by the Rootes Group to build aircraft engines during the war. Later they built the Hillman Avenger and I think Hillman Imp; it had been taken over by Chrysler by then, or Talbot, remember them? It closed in 2006 and the whole site was flattened shortly afterwards.

yep correct it went hillman , chrysler , talbot , talbot being french is where it became peugot
imps were originaly linwood in scotland and british rail had the contract to transport them by rail !!

…the amount eqipment we had to carry was unreal…
I think the thing that cost the most was the floodlight-mast thingy that you could raise out of the roof to illuminate an accident, that and the radios and the PA system…..I remember ‘experimenting’ with the PA system…
“…Janet, bring me a coffee, milk and two sugars please!!!” :diablo:
She was too far away for me to hear what she was saying…..but I didn’t get any coffee!
By: Creaking Door - 15th March 2011 at 11:30
probably correct on that one wasn’t it the ex triumph works ??

I now know a Landy can go downwards, very nearly vertical, in their quarry.
Lincoln .7
any vehicle can do that !!
granted they have varying degrees of condition at the bottom though !!
By: Lincoln 7 - 15th March 2011 at 11:15
Thats right C.D. the amount eqipment we had to carry was unreal, you had to carry an enourmous amount, and prior to driving it, you had to check all the equipment. It was not uncommon also for the duty Insp to meet you in a laybye, and make you M.T. your vehicle out then check that you have all that you should have.
I remember driving the 1st Rangerover we had, it was packed full with our A1 road equipment, so much so it affected the bonnet catch, we were doing about 70, going to an RTA, when the bonnet flipped up, smashed the windscreen and the roof.
This was taken back to Solihull, and whist we were there, we had a L/Rover driver take us in a short wheel base land rover to their quarry and test ground, where we were put through our paces. I now know a Landy can go downwards, very nearly vertical, in their quarry.

If you can make £130.00. from nothing, good for you, well done.
I will try and answer some of your questions as regards police vehicles, being an x Patrol Car driver, but I can however only comment on my time in the Force.
Police Forces buy new cars, as they get huge discounts when they buy from a particular manufacturer, thats why a lot of “KIDS” these days buy Scoobies, because the police use them, and what a good advert for the manufacturers to boot. also they get a full guarantee with them. At Lincoln, we had all the fascilities to repair any damaged cars or full services. That stopped years ago, now contracted out.The traffic Deps are allocated a certain amount of money each year, and have to use it or get less in their next allocation. I am not, in any way shape or form in agreement with “Plain clothes cars” as I consider them a form of entrapment, the logic is good but in practice bad. I had a nasty experience with a plain clothes car once, when I had left the job, and refused to pull over. But thats another story. As regards welding in a cage, manufacturers throw them in with the sale, just as you and I would when swapping cars, asking the salesman, “Can you throw in a set of carpets, mudflaps etc”. as for washing the sick out, any drunk who was sick in my car never went home until he and she’s cleaned it up.! I have no respect for todays sloppy dressed manner, they wear no ties open necked shirts, NO creases in their trousers. There is no need for it, and as I have seen, their heavy handed tactics, in many situations. But I must disagree with you on beaten up vehicles, once you go down that road, all respect, what we have left, and thats not a lot these days.has gone, I.M.H.O. the modern Police are not as good as old school, they, more or less do as they like when on duty, they have no or very little respect for the public but expect it from them.I would, if I were the Home Secretary, make ALL Police Officers spend half their shift in the office to clear paper work, and 4 hrs WALKING THE STREETS, yes, when did YOU actualy see one walking your street, and stopping you to ask you how you thought things were where you live?.Don’t bother to answer that, as I can guess the answere.Lincoln. 7
deffinateley have to agree with you on the tidyness issue ,
i worked as a local community warden ( before PCSO’s ) we were checked daily for smartness and got ********d up and down if we were not imaculate and sweet smelling !
i look at the modern yobs of police officers and have little respect for them , their behaviour is appalling and as for appearance i saw one fat oaf fall out of a police van a few weeks ago he was scruffy , dirty , probably smelly ( thank god i wasn’t close enough )
it wouldn’t have been so bad if he’d fell out of the back but he came from the drivers seat !!
but even with huge block discounts on cars you probably still loose more on depreciation of each unit a one year old car has lost its biggest price drop
and there are dealers in ex fleet cars that could also offer huge block discounts on vehicles
buying wisely at 1 yr old you still have the cars dealers waranty
i’m obviously not saying buy wrecks but i’d rather have a smart copper turn up in a tatty car than a tatty copper turning up in a new car
although to be fair the trick is getting them to turn up atall !!

…police forces always buy new vehicles and in general don’t realy keep them long…
I once worked for Isuzu (UK) who supplied a Police vehicle; it was an Isuzu Trooper motorway patrol vehicle and was the first to be tried-out by the police instead of the (more expensive) Range Rover. Isuzu (UK) did a vast amount of work on it but I believe that the extra kit that was put into it cost more (to the Police) than the vehicle itself so it made good sense to use a new vehicle and get as much use out of it as possible.
peugot ( french )

i had an interesting thaught on how to save what must amount to a hell of a lot of money
police forces always buy new vehicles and in general don’t realy keep them long
so even with generous fleet deals one hell of a lot of tax payers money is lost on depreciation
so why not buy one or two year old vehicles ??
the biggest percentage of lost depreciation money would not be footed by the tax payer , factory screw ups ( sorry re calls ) will be sorted
and what does it matter if the van is a little battered your only going to weld a cage in it for drunks so the less fittings the better so you can power wash it out
colours of police cars are not important as blue lights and sirens are usualy a fair indication to me
the first mot is 3 yrs but police mechanics are pretty keen
they don’t have to be in top looking condition as they are going to get rammed or used in tpac manouvers anyway
also the same for council vehicles why buy brand new when there are more than enough vehicles from bust companys on the market
just a thaught but the savings to be had must be huge
also why don’t councils sell items at the tip
you think i jest i saw a numb nuts throwing out a childs bike
i noticed it was a rare 1970’s limited edition model asked him if i could have it and he gave it me
i took it home photographed it and put it on ebay and walked off £130.00 better off
my sister said at the time ” your embarassing me !”
i said later ” for £130.00 a shot i’d like to get embarassed every day !”
the thing is though that money could have gone in the councils pockets
instead our council has workers that do little but chuck a mental if you put the wrong item in the wrong area
If you can make £130.00. from nothing, good for you, well done.

What have we got left? A very sizeable amount was sold off by another government, in another time.;)
correct the only real asset this country has left in its own hands is the ground you walk on
most of our industry and big business is in foreign hands
asda ( american ) , mcdonalds ( american ) , cadburys ( american , jaguar ( indian ) , power companies ( french ) , peugot ( french ) , honda ( japanese ) , toyota ( japanese ) , HP sauce ( holland ) ,leyland daf ( gaz russian )
there’s very little we haven’t sold ( the foreign car factories in some cases are ex british car factory sites
the excuses to sell them were said to be ” because they are unproffitable to run funny how those companies now crow about huge proffits

Hi There, and thanks for the reply, I know I am going to get creamed on this, but I was thinking along the lines of some of the Castles etc, which her Maj uses rarely, they could, like Chatsworth house, still be open to the public, as apart from the money saved by selling items like that, they would still be in the public domain, but not maintained at Taxpayers expence.
