Hi, Got this grip along with a crash recovered IL2 yoke. This particular grip pictured below has also been recovered from a crash site but history long lost, I am thinking Russian but looks also German?? would love to ID aircraft type if anyone can help.

Hawker, have heard of Rusky Mig grips being converted and sold as WW2 german grips which fetch more money. I guessed Russian as that is where it came from and the quality just isn’t quite the same as a German one. Richard, very interesting and nice it is dated it only cost me £30 quid so quite happy, Ian I agree with you, looks pretty much like a Yak 3 grip then. Will post the IL2 grip soon, cannot lay my hands on the bomb release button that I aquired seperately, it is a bit of a relic but at least is likely to have seen battle rather than a boxed spare part sitting on a shelf, although I wouldn’t turn it down given half the chance!
£30.. Wow (A find that like you say has been there…) Well done..
Always a great feeling when these finds turn up..but not often enough..

No, I have not any aviation part in my “stores”, and I do not know, how to find them for any project.
I can only provide You with more images of R-1 grip (here is grip, produced in 1943) for understanding of it’s design and parts.
See attachments (they are clickable):

I’ve been up staged with that one Flyer! seriously though that is a very nice grip indeed, would you know where I might find a replacement button for mine?? I also have the lower portian of the same grip but part of it is smashed out so it does not marry up very well. Also Flyer, do you have an IL2 grip in your collection?? that is next for little winter evening projects.

It looks like the Russians copied a KG12 but didn’t bother with the decadent western textured covering. Very nice stick there, Flyer.

this pic of a Yak 3 cockpit/grip. Certainly looks right.
Important clarification is here:
– in that period (see the date on grip – February 1944) the fighters of Yak-1, Yak-7, Yak-9 types were in production. And most part of planes of those types had exactly such grip (it have the “R-1” designation) !
First serial Yak-3 fighter was built in March 1, 1944 – but this plane also could to have such grip, produced in February that year !
Thus, we can not say with 100-% certainty about exact plane type.
Instead, we can say only – this grip is from some of Russian Yak-1, or Yak-3, or Yak-7, or Yak-9 fighter.
See this grip on yoke:
And YES – according to official sources, this grip design based on grip design of German Me-109 fighter !

Googling throws up this pic of a Yak 3 cockpit/grip: http://www.ww2aircraft.net/forum/album/color-photos/p14812-yak-3-cockpit-image-from-the-yak-3-pilots-manual.html. Certainly looks right. A very nice addition to the collection! Would love to see the Il2 grip too.

The stamped markings in the second photo are certainly Russian.
The lower-case “r” is the Russian abbreviation for “year,” so the manufacturing date for the grip was February of 1944 (“2-44r”).

Hi Redhillwings,
Not sure if this helps, but going by my relic Me 109 grip the one on the left in the photo of the 2 grips, the gun button flap looks identical (See photos). interesting to know if there is anything Russian that is similar.
What makes you think Russian?
Cheers Brad..
