The loudest plane i’ve ever heard at take off was the B36 peacemaker……six turnin’ and four burnin’…… you’ve never heard anything like it!!
Where was that Steve? My two regrets aircraftwise are not seeing a B-36 and a Valkyrie flying.

Aptly named… git. 🙂
I’m the same age. IIRC my barnet was also mid to dark brown but it’s been largely grey for 5, 10 years now, I really can’t remember. The grey I don’t care about but I’m really grumpy when I look in the mirror and see the pink highlights on top of my head.
I shouldn’t really complain, my Dad was bald by the age of 24. It’s not going to stop me though.

Nobody has mentioned the main benefit of being old(ish).
That is that you would have lived through the golden age of aviation, i.e, the 50’s and 60’s!! Need I say more?
I could not have put it better myself.
As for grey hair – I still have a full head of dark brown hair at the age of 53 but this is more than offset by my haggard lizard-like features.

I went from Scotland down to Lakenheath many moons ago to see a bunch of 105s come over for a deployment. Fantastic.
That must have been a sight worth seeing.
I remember seeing the first Phantoms to visit the UK which was at Bentwaters in the early 1960’s. There was both a USAF and a USN example – they were such an usual shape at the time which made them fascinating to watch. Mind you that was well before they became two a penny

Unfortunately I never had the pleasure of either seeing or hearing an F105 in the flesh. However in its day I considered it to be the nicest looking of all its contempories, even the Phantom!

I reckon thatwould be the ultimate stealth weapon, you’d know damn well the thing was coming the only doubt would be when.

That sounds a contradiction in terms – it wouldn’t be making much “peace” with all that noise!
Probably the noise would stop people fighting as they gawped as to where the noise was coming from? 😀

I don’t think I ever saw an F-105 fly.
I’ve seen one (two actually) as it is to be found on the gate at RAF Croughton and was formerly on the flightline at UH.
(The second one is stored dismantled at Duxford awaiting some TLC)

If they’d got 105s that would have been even noisier.

I remember them as well. noisy things
I was thinking slightly before then when the 20th TFW were based at Wethersfield with F100’s! The rumour at the time was that they were to be replaced with F105’s which unfortunately never happened.

They were yes but I had some good times there (and I started my career there)
By: mike currill - 2nd December 2005 at 08:48
True – I remmber them at Heyford… 🙂
Don’t get too many of them over here though. 😀

The RAAF here still has thirty year old F1-11s
By: Arm Waver - 1st December 2005 at 08:29
True but there were a number of other types too. The F-16 seems to be everywhere…
I miss the variety.
