Today turned out sunny at MAM. Not only with the weather but also with a fulsome occasion.
Guild of Aviation Artists held their annual there today in the Robin hangar with a display of aviation art (what else  ).
As you all may know, MAM is one of, if not the, foremost museums for history related to Sir Frank Whittle. They have an extensive archive of material pertaining to the man’s life and work. Consequently it was with no little pride that the museum managed to secure Frank Whittle’s son, Ian, as the keynote speaker.
The exhibition comprises over 200 paintings, drawings and pen & ink sketches and will be open to the public from tomorrow. All the exhibits are worth seeing but for me, Ieuan Layton-Mathews’ (GAvA) rendering of PR.9 XH169 outside the hangar at Marham on an ‘open day’ in 2006 was the best. (Guess why! 😉 )
Pictures show Ian Whittle addressing the members and invited guests.

(P.S. Sorry we didnt meet Les!)
Likewise TT. But at least you’ve caught me in one of your pics! 😮 In the shot of Ian Whittle addressing the audience I’m the fat bloke in the jeans and green 3 Sqn polo shirt sitting on the table to one side. (Wouldn’t mind a larger version of that please – PM me.)
I guess the inset (below) must be you then. 😎
Anyway, so glad everbody seems to have enjoyed the day. I’m sure the guys at MAM will appreciate that after all the damn hard work they put in preparing the Robin and setting up the whole thing – including the magnificent buffet.
A different and worthwhile day’s outing I think you’ll all agree.

😀 I had the pleasure of chatting to Ieuan Layton-Mathews at the GAA Exhibition in Pall Mall last month, what a lovely guy.
He was painting a Hunter there ,i wonder how that has progressed?
Another smashing guy was Graham Cook who was painting a Sopwith Camel over the sea outside the Pall Mall gallery. He asked my 8 year daughter what she thought of his painting, i cringed as she tells it like she sees it but she said some really nice things and got an autographed postcard for her and her brother LOL.
All those paintings are fantastic to see if you get the chance, 😀

Ahh I see an old fashioned game of work out the missing word.
Is there an A in it? Great ok that was a lucky guess. Is there an S in it as well. OK youve got me stumped now. :diablo:
Work in progress matey work in progress.
Great pictures of the aircraft and the event Ben. The TSR2 pic you mention is I think one of those that generates debate from both sides of the fence. Wouldn’t want it on a wall in my house but its visually a very powerfull piece.
Glad you appreciated my taste of pics. Ive spent ages looking at that Rapide and If Mr Heath can cut me a deal I may be tempted. I know he occasionally reads the forum in his lunch hour. Hello Mr Heath “MAM’s Self Titled Chief Guide” 😀

As I said, the workmanship on the paintings….as well as the aircraft was superb…
I rather liked the TSR2 painting, which caused some debate at the exhibition(its breaking out of its frame you see!) and Keith Woodcock’s Moth artwork was lovely (cover art to Mid Counties moth book) – I really like his work, but couldnt justify £1200…:(
Turning to the aircraft, the shiny Beaver caught my eye, and the amount of fresh paintwork on other aircraft, F.6, Prentice, Sea Vixen, Jav, Yellow Peril etc – the star must be the Canberra which is absolutely and I mean, absolutely immaculate.
The F-4 is obviously mid-repaint, get your **** in gear Garrett!
And finally a shot of the camo’d Iskra, think Ollie was asking about ir recently.
So, well done MAM, you’ve given us a standard to aspire to!

Hope you dont mind me jumping on the thread chaps – thanks to Chris Heath, the mystery benefactor…. 🙂 I too was fortunate to attend and thoroughly enjoyed it – I lusted after the Rapide pic too Martin….
Here are some of my pics as well as some of the FANTASTIC work MAM have been doing to their airframes since I last visited – if you havent been for a while I urge you to make a repeat visit, the exhbition is the perfect time and runs til the 2nd September…. not all paintings were ‘mega’ bucks, starting from about £150 which isnt bad for ORIGINAL art, aviation or not!
Anyway, pics follow…

The Canberra was a nice picture but for me the best picture at the show has to be this one below of a Dragon Rapide. The artist is Roger Murray. Very much in the style of the old railway posters. Now if only I had some spare money in the bank…………..
The same artists Hurricane was rather nice as well.
Pics taken from the Guilds www. Im sure they wont mind me posting them here 😀

Ieuan is brilliant, is he not? When I attended the GAVA AGM this year, his rendition of the Comet (done in a few hours with constant interruptions by the public) was wonderful. With the comet he complained about getting the subtle curve of the cockpit area just right… no doubt this time he will complain about the slightly wonky roundel on the side of the PR9…. That man could produce art better than mine if he wore leather gauntlets and used a crayon….. was it a good turn out?
