Guizhou JL-9G

The JL-9 has evolved into a trainer parallel to the T-45 Goshawk, for training PLANAF pilots for carrier duties called JL-9G. Seven hard points, with two dedicated for wet stations. Up to three drop tanks. Pretty much a MiG-21bis using Chinese parts from nose to engine, only really sticking to the original gun, tail, and engine. The original JL-9 used the main wings of the J-7F, but it was unsuitable for the PLANAF. The cockpit uses a two tier inline configuration so the instructor has ample vision of the trainee.

It uses the license-built WS-13F(C) turbojet (R-25-300) with approximately 11k dry thrust and 14.6k wet thrust. Service ceiling 53k feet. Top speed Mach 1.5 at 36k feet. Nose can accommodate a Grifo S7 radar like the one used in J-7MF. (As opposed to LanceR C using ELTA 2032, and Bison using Kopyo M.) Mechanical flight controls with mil-1553b data bus links to five of the seven hard points. No BVR capability planned. (Note: Previous Grifo versions were actually able to demonstrate compatibility with PL-11, SD-10, Sparrow, MICA, and AIM-120.)

“In order to adapt to the carrier operation environment, JL-9G features some extensive modifications. They include strengthened landing gears and enlarged wings. Leading edge slaps and leading edge root extensions were installed in order to reduce the take-off and landing speed at higher AOA. Consequently the twin ventral stabilizing fins were removed. It also features a taller tailfin housing additional ECM equipment on the top and offering more stability during the high AOA take-off and landing. New DSIs were installed as well which reduce the weight.*New conformal antennas are installed at the wingtips. JL-9G made its maiden flight in 2009 at GAIC. Two prototypes (S/N 423 & 424) were tested at CFTE. One (#423) had a tail arresting hook installed. The latest image (November 2013) indicated that JL-9G is entering the service with PLAN (S/N 83x0x) without the tail arresting hook. The trainer is expected to support the carrier based J-15 fighter. An export version dubbed FTC-2000G low-cost LIFT aircraft was unveiled at the 2012 Zhuhai Airshow. This version features an additional*pair of side pylons underneath the fuselage for bombs as well as wingtip pylons for AAMs.”
