Günther "Franzl" Lützow

Hello all.

A collegue of mine who collects military artifacts of various eras has recently aquired the Tunic of Günther “Franzl” Lützow, a WWII Luftwaffe ace.

http://www.luftwaffe.cz/lutzow.html

He plans to keep it for some time as an investment of sorts for his Children/Grandchildren. Obviously it holds some value, but he has no idea what figure to tell his house insurance providers.

He asked me but I’ve not got a clue frankly as it’s not something I know much about! I said I’d ask on a forum I post on as there’s an extensive knowledge base on it, hence the post!

Any ideas? Or can you put me in touch with someone who might have an idea?

Many thanks!

You can’t really use the VC as any equivilent to a German decoration, as their system didn’t work the same way. But yes, Lutzow was highly decorated as KC with Oak Leaves and Swords holder, and during the Battle of Britain, became only the 14th Jagdflieger to be awarded the KC based on a nominal 20 victories scored (although he had in fact only 15 at the time).

Indeed, Lützow earnt his decorations the hard way early on in the war, was held in very high regard by his peers:cool:

I don’t understand the German medal system but I believe he was awarded the equivilent of the VC? Perhaps someone with more understanding and knowledge of the Luftwaffe could explain?

The provenance is there and air tight. The collector he got it from is a leading authority on German WWII memoribillia (unsure of his name) and he got it from the widow of the aforementioned ace, many years ago. He told me that a letter from the guy he got it from will more than cover prividence. Apparently it still even has his name tag sewn inside. I know, anyone could mimic this, but I have no reason to doubt it’s legitimacy!

It’s with my friends Uncle, Stateside at the moment, getting the badges sewn back on with authentic 1940’s cotton. I’m told that after WWII you couldn’t sell German uniforms with the badges still on. Thankfully they were removed and put into one of the pockets. I will post pictures here as soon as I can. From what I can understand he was one of Germany’s best and very highly decorated. Many thanks to all who replied!

Sounds very interesting, any pics available? That would be worth big money to the right people. Provenance might be dificult though?

I agree, potentially could sell for big money……but only with watertight 100% provenance.

Be nicer to see on display in a muesum though…:)

Interesting thought! Not sure he’d fancy the idea though!

Just an idea but your friend could list it on an internet auction site and see what people were prepared to pay…

…just be sure that he places the ‘winning’ bid before the end. 😉

It will cost him something in fees but his insurer could hardly dispute its worth if it effectively ‘sold’ for that price.
