Guy Gibson query

Hi

I have been interested in the Dam Busters for several years and during off/on research I came upon something that I can’t find again saying that Gibson started the war flying in Hampdens. Does anyone know if this is correct and if so what squadron and if possible serial and codes. I am interested as I would like to build a small scale model in his markings.
