This programme repeated tonight (Sat. 5th March) at 8pm on More4
Don’t forget to tell the wife / girlfriend…
…the popularity of Guy Martin’s Spitfire may not be entirely due to the amount of screen-time the Spitfire gets! 😉

The bearings used on the swing wing Tornado had to be pre cooled before fitting into the variable geometry mechanism.

I, for one, certainly never realised that human body heat was sufficient to have that effect. Of course given the effects of head on metal it is obvious that expansion would occur to certain extent though one would hardly it to be sufficient to affect something that much even with the fine tolerances they were working to.

I loved the part where the pins that hold the wings in place were ground to the precise diameter and then the warmth from Guy’s hand was enough to make them swell to over size.
If I ever win the lottery I will order a MKI . Kevin

Official viewing figures:- 2.43 million.
This is deemed by the production company to be ‘a huge achievement, especially against the ‘popular’ shows’ .
For comparison, that evening Downton Abbey had 8.33 million viewers

Hello,

Thought it was a fantastic programme, would have loved to have seen more of the actual restoration, I am wondering if there will be a DVD issued including all those footage not in the shown programme.
