Dear all,
I have a MKIID Gyro Gunsight that I am looking to restore.
Unfortunately, it is missing the glass and its brackets as well as a few other bits.
Does anyone have a copy of the manual for this gunsight or a diagram of the parts?
Is there anyone who has any spares for it?
Lastly (sorry for all the questions), I am aware that there is a fighter and bomber version of this sight – how can one tell the difference?
Thanks in anticipation,
TEC

Thanks for the info Bruce. As someone who has so much experience in this field, how hard would it be for me to track down the parts to revert the sight to its original spec? I guess it would be much easier to obtain the missing bits but leave the rest of it alone!
QLDSpitty – thanks for that link. For some reason that website looks so familiar!!!!!!
Bob – thats it, I just couldnt put my finger on it!!
Cheers,

OK, this is a postwar modified sight, fitted to early jets, and possibly late Piston fighters.
You are missing the ten pin plug, the main glass, and the mechanism and glass for the shade (you have one or two bits of it, but thats all). You are also missing the metal cover that goes over the glass.
You could modify it back to the wartime sight, as has been done with the sight pictured in the links Mk12 has provided. You would not need the shade then.

It looks like we can safely say this is a fighter sight!
Can anyone give me any pointers as to what it is missing?

Hi folks,
Thanks for all your very informative replies.
I have attached 4 pics of the sight. I can think of glass, the brackets, hood and the plug from the end of the cable – no doubt there are many other things missing!

Not necessarily, no – the turret sight could also have this, and in fact mine has been modified with Japanese aircraft for use with TIger Force Lancs.
They are not necessarily wartime, and many were modded for use postwar, with different scales, and an adjustable dimmer screen.
Post us a picture – I’ll tell you what is missing.

I think I may have the reflector and sunshield glasses, possibly some brackets too, think the fighter one was a IIC.

Would the German aircraft listed on the ranging scale be indicative?

I see “G.G.S. IID Used” added to a lot of the gun camera film title cards I have been watching.

According to R. Wallace Clarke, in Volume 2 0f “British Aircraft Armament,” the IID was the pilot’s sight, while the gunner’s was the IIC.
