This was mentioned in the Duxford Diary but I think it’s newsworthy enough to warrant a new thread…
HAC’s Hawker Fury flew again for the first time in nearly 3 years yesterday! One of the finest looking 1930s biplanes (it doesn’t knock the Demon from its perch though, if you ask me) and a beautiful aeroplane. Certainly one of the aircraft I’ve been waiting and hoping to see fly for years – I’m sure I’m not alone!
Plenty of photographs and some background info here… http://www.globalaviationresource.com/v2/2015/04/23/historic-aviation-news-hawker-fury-k5674-returns-to-flight/

The other HAC Kestrel had an engine fault, and it was realised that this one would be the same.
So this one came apart too.
I was lucky enough to inspect this aircraft in detail last year (as I am doing an Isaacs Fury)
and I have to say that this is an outstanding restoration.
The attention to detail is quite superb. Guy Black and the HAC team deserve tremendous credit for an amazing contribution to all our aviation heritage.
I can’t wait to see it fly.

A bit of an over-simplification, as that substantial wing structure on the Hurricane is very different from that on the biplanes
To a certain extent I agree. But if you think about it the stresses which would have been borne through the bracing struts and wire would necessitate a much stronger wing in a monoplane and voila there you end up with a Hurricane. I have a fondness for the Hawker products though as they just look right. To my mind the Hurricane has always lookesd more right than the Spitfire even if it does lack the latter’s aerodynamic refinement.

Engine certification issues if the third hand info. I received was correct. May of course be a rumour, so take with a pinch of salt if you wish.

Hi All,
Silly question time I am afraid, I can’t remember reading on the forum that the Fury had been grounded for whatever reason to that end why has the Fury not flown for three years please ?
Geoff.

Wasn’t the Hurricane initially known, whilst evolving in Hawker’s D.O., as the “Monoplane Fury”?

Great shot 😎 You can see some Hurricane in the design from that angle 🙂
In fact if you overlay a transparency of a Hurricane to the same scale you can see the Hurricane in all the Hawker biplanes of that era. The Hurricane looks like a monoplane version of them with enclosed cockpit and disappearing legs.

One of the most beautiful aircraft ever, bar none. What a fantastic restoration.

Wow, so now a potential formation of 5 pointy shiny biplanes!

I passed this by on Facebook last night because I thought it was this machine, then today people were gushing about it having its “first flight” so I presumed it was a fresh restoration….one very confused Kiwi!
Great to see it’s flown again and now I’ll definitely need to buy the FL2015 DVD!
