Haiti Flattened by Earthquake – Anybody Bothered?

I’m not letting them have my personal details again, so they and other charities can bombard me with begging junk mail. I’ll be donating cash at the bank, nice and anonymously.

The aid response does seem to be very chaotic, but it looks as though the country’s infrastructure has totally gone. I’ve not seen any sign of Haitian police on the TV reports. It must make things incredibly difficult for the relief workers, having to work entirely on their own initiative, with no guidance. They deserve our full respect for their efforts.

Let’s hope the Haitians’ lot improves as quickly as possible – I just can’t imagine how they must be feeling, with their world torn apart beneath them and little or no help in sight.

What I thought was strange were pictures of life going on quite normaly, people passing by the bodies in the street with out even a look.

But that’s exactly what happens when there is no infrastructure. I think the Americans used to call it going to hell in a hand basket.

If you’ve survived, uninjured, I expect the last thing you’re going to be bothered about is burying the dead, unless they’re your own. You’re going to be more interested in protecting yourself and any surviving loved ones. You are right, the dead need burying, but without anyone orgainising any concerted effort little will be achieved. From what I heard last night, there is little or no power, little or no effective communication and precious little hope. All these things take time. Those there to help need to organise themselves first, then the organisations there to help are going to need security as shown by US troops handing out ration packs under armed guard.

Help will come, organisation will take place, but it will take time. Personally, other than the immediate needs of medical aid, the provision of food, water and shelter and the gradual reintroduction of some form of infrastructure, I really don’t see Haiti recovering from this for many years, if at all.

I suppose the lack of response is because there is saturation media coverage and the news and information is changing hourly so that comment of a general nature becomes a bit superfluous. We all know what we all feel about it.:(

The only relief traffic being allowed across is either Red Cross or UN sponsored.

I presume they took the correct decision and left because they would be in the way, eating and drinking valuable resources.
However, maybe they weren’t that convicted to the cause and didn’t want a disease or something horrible.
The hypocrisy is thousands of years old, the Pope and his handbag on fire was for one purpose only….to disguise the stench of the poor as he walked amongst them…..whilst he dressed in pure silk which was distorted by the weight of Gold thread.
If there was a God, of any colour or creed, then he/she/it would not let the disasters happen in the 1st place.

Anyway, stuff Religion, I’m shocked at the time it’s taking to get the Aid from the Airport to the towns. The Rescue teams stuck over at Dom Rep. while people died. Not good.
Once again, the US leads the way in benevolence and there is no oil or any other commodity of value there either (Just to shut the sceptics up).
I’ve been next door (Dom. Rep.) and that was one of the dirtiest unhealthy poverty stricken places I’ve been to, Haiti is reputed to be so much worse. Those buildings would have gone on a Richter of 3 never mind 7. The poor didn’t stand a chance.

I saw something that struck me on the news the other day. While the initial response was starting to trickle in, an Icelandair aircraft was, apparently, flown in to bring out Christian Missionaries. If ever a Country needed the help of God and his missionaries it is Haiti. The Christians amongst the Haitian population must already feel that their God has forsaken them. Seeing His missionaries leaving by the plane load is really rubbing salt into the wound.

If that is true, I personally feel it was probably wrong for them to do. I do know that there are some mission organizations locally that are going in. We have friends who work closely with the people there and they are trying to help. A local Christian radio station (talk show host is a friend) here already has five semi-trucks of supplies going as well.

A two-year old child pulled alive from the rubble after two days.
Poor souls.
It always seems ironic to me how often natural disasters seem to afflict people who are already desperately poor anyway.

Fair comment…..I suppose I deserved that!

I’m still a little surprised that it hasn’t been mentioned on General Discussion.

I don’t think a bunch of aviation anoraks expessing shock/horror/displeasure is really going to help anyone. 😀
People that want to donate know how and where to do it.
