Halifax Flight Engineer to be buried 64 years on

Interesting story in the news today…

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1075812/The-RAF-bomber-pilot-single-handedly-recovered-body-pilot-comrade-lost-Berlin-raid-60-years-ago.html

(Shame the headline is misleading, should read ‘The RAF navigator who single-handedly recovered the body of the flight engineer and comrade he lost on Berlin raid 64 years ago’ … but perhaps I’m being a bit picky):(

The two surviving members of the crew who attended the funeral are expected to be at the Bomber Command veterans gathering and signing event at Duxford on 29th November.

Just an update…..

Odd that the MOD still seem disinclined to give the full account of how this airman was found and identified. Doubtless they have their reasons. To me, that part of the tale seems the most poignant and interesting human element of the whole story!

What is really interesting is the MOD press release on their website here:
http://www.raf.mod.uk/news/archive.cfm?storyid=E6B501D1-1143-EC82-2E177A53A99971FC
They make no mention of the fellow crew member finding his colleague. Not only that, but a “journo” friend called the MOD press office this week to ask how and by whom the remains were found. The reply was that the information requested was “not available”. The Daily Mail article, perhaps, gives some insight into the reluctance of the MOD to be a little economical with the facts. Maybe it just doesn’t suit the MOD to tell the real story about how a fellow crew member actually recovered his friend. Or maybe I am just a cynic? Whatever, it is a shame the MOD press officers cannot even spell. One hopes the poor fellow is being buried as opposed to burried.

Finally at rest

I agreed with one of the comments on the mail WWW site, and I’ve said similar myself on here – true heros, not overpaid footballers etc who often get called the same.

Rest in peace, and thank you.
