Halifax help needed

Hi,
can any of you help me clear up a few areas of doubt that I have with some Halifax wing details.
1- cable cutters/ leading edge inlets. On a MkIII should there be any inlets or cable cutters on the leading edge. The Canadian example pictured is actually an A MK VII but is dressed to depict a MKIII. It shows inlets at all the points that cable cutters would have been fitted. Other pictures show smooth leading edges.

2- Landing lamps. Earlier versions had a double lamp where as later were single lamp. Which one for a MKIII

Lastly just a gratuitous Halifax picture of a machine in the range that I want to depict.

Many thanks
Phil

Thanks for the link Phil, nice site.

My 1/32 Halifax is very slowly progressing but nothing compared to
your attention to detail though.

Cheers

Hi Cees
Thanks for the info. I think that I got the idea that it was dressed as a MKIII from something that I remembered wrongly from stuff posted early in the restoration. How I missed the lack of a dorsal turret i don’t know. Looking so intently at so many pictures can at times make the mind go a bit ga ga. Working out all the panels and rivet lines for the wing surfaces is one case in point. The surface should I be able to pull it off will look ace.

Hi Phil,

let’s see if I can help you. As far as I know later in the war the use of cablecutters were discontinued officially but some squadrons or even crews adopted their own opinions about this and had them either fitted or removed.

We have a portion of the leading edge of a Mk III which was only ten aircraft removed from LV907, the famous “Friday the Thirteenth” from the production line and this was not fitted with cable cutters.

The C Mk VIII manual I have shows the single landing lamp but I think you can be sure that the Mk III (which basically was a conversion of the Merlin engined variant) had two landing lights.

NA337 is restored as itself being an A VII, it has not been converted into a Mk III.

How are your wings progressing?

Cheers

Cees
