HALIFAX JD417 CRASH SITE

Halifax JD417 crashed struck the northern side of Yr Eifl mountain above the village of Trevor, Caernarvonshire. GR/ 123/365448 on 3rd September 1944.

I would very much like to visit this crash site. Can any members help me decide if this is possible or if it is too inexcessible. I am not an experienced hill walker or mountineer!

Any advice on the location, most suitable time of year to visit, what I might need to do regarding contact with farmers etc whose land it may be on would be most helpful and much appreciated!

Also has any forum member visited the crashsite?

Kind regards – Malcolm.

I last went up there 30-odd years ago and there wasn’t much left! The easiest approach is from the layby on the B4417 where the path starts up to Tre Ceiri, a Bronze (?) Age settlement. The latter is worth the walk even if the Hali probably isn’t. The path is fairly steep in parts but nothing dangerous or too strenuous. Time of year doesn’t really matter as long as the forecast is good. If snow is lying, you probably won’t find any bits. Difficult to get lost up here but be careful of the nasty rocky bits down the north side. One of the RAF salvage crew was badly injured here in a fall!
