Halifax PN323 pics?

Hi all,

Found these two pics on e-bay and think they are from Halifax cockpit PN323 which Mark 12 used to walk around as a box and is now on display at the IWM Lambeth, London (the cockpit, not Mark12). If so were these taken while at the Skyfame Museum (Peter Thomas saved the cockpit anyway) or when the cockpit was transferred to IWM after Skyfame closed? Any of our more “life experienced” contributors have some background info?

Cheers

Not an expert but have heard that PN323 was the last one, although whether in Britain or the world I don’t know.

Were there others around, beyond our shores, that were scrapped after this one was dismantled?

WASN’T THE LAST ONE SCRAPPED IN ARGENTINA IN ABOUT 1971 ? Ex French, crashed years before but stored in a hanger

Not being a Halifax expert (though I’m sure someone will be along shortly, who is 😉 ), was this the last Halifax that existed in the UK at the time it was scrapped?

If so, wonder why nobody felt it worth keeping

Thanks Jester,
Great pics, and also to see PN323 with the tail down. Pity it was scrapped.
Must be a misplaced childhood thing.

On the subject of Halifax’s, here’s another one here took of one, don’t know the date/location of this one.
This is PP217, the first Halifax VIII to be built.

PN 323

Certainly looks like it was taken at Skyfame. I spent many hours personally wire brushing aluminium oxide off the cockpit section and generally cleaning up the interior, handpainting green primer and so on, so was familiar with the view from the cockpit. It was placed at the right hand side of the Skyfame Hangar facing outwards, so the light shown in the photo is daylight through the hangar doors. The hangar side door was immediately adjacent to the front of the cockpit. We had to replace some of the skin on the port side just about where the pilot’s left elbow would have been situated. I could explain why, but won’t as the reason might incriminate me!

It’s a language thing. 🙂

Mark

😮
Oops sorry Mark, nearly chocked in my coffee this morning when I read it again.
When was the last time someone called you a box 😀 😀

If you were then the IWM surely had a reason to put you on display.
Indeed, must be a language thing. 😮

Actually, when I first looked at the photo, I wondered if it might be a Halton, then I decided it would have to have the second set of rudder pedals and control column, etc.

I notice someone’s nicked the throttle quadrant!

Mind if I search your home and garage, sir? :diablo:

Squinting at the writing above the artificial horizon, I fancy I can make out something like –323, so you may be right.

It’s certainly not a standard wartime Halifax judging by all the mods.

Hi Alan,

Mmm that would be more likely to be my text and your garage 😀

Cheers
