Halifax Serials

Can anyone supply me with a listing(*) which shows the Handley Page Halifax serials broken down into Mark, but more importantly, Series.

A complete listing would be brilliant but I am particularly interested in which Mark I serials fell into Series I, II and III (although I will have to do the same for the other Marks later)

Any help would be much appreciated

Regards

Pete

Thanks for the feedback; always appreciated.

Graham, you have perfectly summed up the problem that I am having in determining which serials relate to which series, hence this thread.

It may well be that there is not a cross reference, but I will keep my fingers crossed. Sadly, the AM78 only record the aircraft at Mark level (without reference to the series), so obtaining those has not helped me.

Regards (and thanks again)

I thought that either of Ken Merrick’s Halifax books would provide this. (Plus a lot more, of course.) It’s a little more vague: 25 aircraft were stressed to Series II, and 9 with extra tanks. When re-engined with Mk.XXs modified aircraft became Series III. The serials however are split L9485-9534, L9560-L9584, and L9600-L9608. The implication is that earlier aircraft could be raised to the later variants – or at least a ser 2 to a ser 3. For trials L9515 had been fitted with extra tanks, and L9519 to ser 3 standard.

You will run into problems with the Mk.II, because of confusion in references as to just what is implied by a Ser 1a – Merrick says the Merlin 22 with Morris radiators not the glass nose as commonly assumed (and apparently used at unit level at the time). Many aircraft were refitted with the new nose.

The list is in the recent Merrick book, if no-one else sends it in the meantime I can do it later or tomorrow. The MkI series I, II & III were all in the first HP batches from memory.
