Halifax W1048

After looking at the pics of this historic airframe on the 57 Rescue site, I am very disappointed at hendon that they should allow such a valuable airframe to be displayed like this. Would she not look better standing one ner wheels restored and parked near the lancaster? Whatever happened to the rest of her? Namely cowlings, top fuselage skin near the gun turrett and canopy glass ,nav blister etc…….

W 1048

Peter
Thanks for the web address, but I was actually thinking about W 1048 – are there any pics of this aircraft as she currently exists?

Regards

I’m afraid that’s bollox.

The aircraft we are discussing are all made largely of metal.

Metal decays over time, returning gradually to the ground from which the ore was originally extracted. There is nothing available in current technology that will prevent these airframe corroding away as each year passes. This is universally acknowledged by the preservation movement. We can delay it by keeping the airframes indoors, controlling their environment etc. But we cannot stop it.

It will take a long time, and so will be no concern of you or I. 🙁 Also, who knows what developments will occur in the future? But as of now, each airframe’s clock is ticking away. All we can do is replace bits until we are left with 100% replicas

RE: Halifax W1048

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-08-02 AT 09:53 PM (GMT)]Come on lads dont forget the the RAFM doesn’t own only one aeroplane, they all have to take there turn, you cant restore Lancasters, Ventura’s, Hampden’s, Halifaxes all at the same time when you have limited finances and staffing. Each aircraft will eventually get its turn, the aircraft are all preserved forever.

The RAFM has adopted the policy of aquiring aircraft when they are about, instead of only adding to the colletion when they can restore/displaying them.

If the RAFM hadn’t rescued Halifax W1048 and had left it where it was until they were ready to restore it, it would still be at the bottom of a lake,

Cmon guys I dont like this whole costs too much idea. To restore the Hali could cost as much or as little as they wanted it to. If Canada can restore a Hali then why cant we.

RE: Halifax W1048

Welcome to the club mate-people have been saying all these things for years!

It’s been argued that it would cost too much to fully restore the Halifax, and/or that it wouldn’t be so genuine anymore if this was done too-but Hendon has many far less genuine aircraft on show already. (Substantial rebuilds, replicas etc) Also, Hendon are now embarking on the long-term restoration of the Hampden, which in many ways is in worse condtion and is less complete.

At the end of the day, they chickened out, and just dumped it there. It IS a moving sight to see for real, but it’s also a big, big shame.

Still, if they did restore it, they’d probably prop it’s tail up in the air on some stupid budgie-perch like the Lancaster…mumble mumble!!!
