On Friday, 24th May 1940 Hampden P1336 was downed by a balloon barrage. It hit the barrage over Coventry and landed in a cricket ground.
I think this was the Coventry & North Warwickshire Cricket Ground, Binley Road, Coventry.
Any more detials please

Hampden FD265 – P1336
I recently came across details of the crash of this aircraft from Malcolm Barrass on “Air of Authority” web site www.rafweb.org. He states that this Hampden aircraft was from No.106 Sqdn at Finningley and on the 25.05.1940 it collided with barrage balloon cables over Coventry (No.6 Balloon Centre – 916/917 Sqnd) and it crashed on a Sports Field in the city.
The crew were : F/O J M D Irvine, Sgt. J R Collingham, and A/C1 S E Firth.

The ‘Handley Page Hampden & Hereford crash log‘ only records P1336 as being lost on the night of the 25/5/40 stating ‘collided with balloon cable at 23.08 hours over Coventry while on cross-country, killing three, Cat W’.
FD265 was a Vengance IV!

Hamoden P1336
Viper/Flood,
I checked the Hampden File. Unfortunately, I haven’t much to add..
The aircraft was involved in some night training.
Cheers,
Todd

Not heard of that one, but WR Chorleys Bomber Command Losses 1939-40 gives:
P1336 of 106Sqn (ZN- ) flew into Coventry balloon barrage at night, killing all on board.
P/O JMD Irvine
Sgt JR Collingham
AC1 SE Firth
I’d guess it might be the same one…
