Not this one, it’s AE436 of 455 Squadron, recovered from Tsatsa, Sweden where it force landed in 1942, the Hunt Brothers have one from Russia though, more information on the East Kirby one here http://hem.passagen.se/laurimaa/tsatsa_eng.htm
Wasn’t it just a tailsection of a Hampden?
Cheers

It’s nice to see the Hampden’s on its way back to static display. Was this Hampden salvaged from Russia?
Cheers,
Todd

i know wat you mean…it is a great pity though i think..dont get me wrong, it is fantastic to see the BBMF and other british warbirds flying..but it would be great to see some of the lesser known aircraft of the war flying too…i would give enything to see a halifax, stirling, wellington or a typhoon flying again…enyone agree…

Scimatar,
I too have a soft spot for the Hampden. I’m lucky enough to live 30 minutes from the only one on static display in the world. Although, I would much rather see a Whitley… I can never see enough Whitley photos. I hope a salvage takes place this year! What is the status of the Hampden being restored in the UK? Any recent photos?
Cheers,
Todd

Fingers crossed i’ll be going to East Kirby this week or next, so i’ll try and get some pics for you of it there. How much is left of the one at East Kirby? I’ve heard it described as either just the forward fuselage, or the entire fuselage,
Scimitar,
like you & the other guys, I’ve always had a soft spot for the H.P. Hampden since I built the old Airfix kit back in ’69 or ’70 as a kid.
It’s roughly 9 years between my first visit to East Kirkby & my last, most recent visit (late summer, last year).
Speaking to one of the guys involved, I asked why there had been comparitively little progress, during the time of my numerous visits.
Was informed that the main guy/driving force behind the project, was/had been a serving R.A.F. engineer at Waddington, who had subseqently fallen ill & sadly passed away, succumbing to cancer.
Also that the two guy’s who had taken over the project subsequently, didn’t have the same zest/drive/knowledge or available spare time since……..hence the slow progress.
The nose/front & mid-section are coming together (new metal) – the rear ‘tadpole’/fuselage section was non-existant on my visits, although the heavily damaged original tailplane WAS there. An impressive exhibit nonetheless.
In an adjacent ‘Nissan’ (hut not car !), you’ll see two massive original geodetic wings (& rotting fuel tanks) from the remains of a ‘Wimpey’.

One of my fathers friend, now sadly passed on, trained on them and said that it was a bit of a handfull! He must have had a soft spot for it though as he asked me to make a model for him and he went to Vancouver to see the one there

RAFM has one under rebuild, as does East Kirkby (long term) and theres one in Canada based on an original nose, remnants of an under water wreckovery & fibreglass.
