dark light

Hampshire Airfields website

Sadly, for some days now the http://www.hampshireairfields.co.uk website seems to have been inaccessible and may have ceased to exist. I have, for many years, found it a useful and valuable research tool. But now, if one tries to access it, via either a hyperlink or by typing its address into a search engine, the result is either a blank screen or one is taken to a website headed ‘Support Services’ and which appears to be that of http://www.sedoparking.com, which appears to be a dealer (buying/selling/parking) in domain names. I hope that my pessimism is misplaced and the website is only suffering a temporary glitch. Only time will tell.

The Wayback Machine – at https://archive.org/  – is a real godsend to anyone trying to find “old” website or web pages. I admit it can be challenging to use, and just because it has crawled a website is no guarantee that ALL of that site’s contents are now in the Wayback Machine, but it’s a whole lot better than nothing and well worth supporting with a few bucks.

Sad news indeed. As a member of this forum Dave Fagan started and contributed to some very interesting threads and his Hampshire Airfields website was an incredible resource which he must have spent a huge amount of time and effort creating – a real labour of love. It’s good to know that efforts are being made to preserve much of his material as it would be very sad if all Dave’s hard work was simply to disappear.

I am told that it has been announced, on the facebook group that Dave Fagan (Daveg4otu) apparently created, that he has died. That, presumably, explains the disappearance of the www.hampshireairfields.co.uk website. I understand that efforts are being made to preserve the material that was on the website.

If I remember correctly the website was created by Daveg4otu who used to frequent this forum. Hope all is well with him!

Thanks MM, that site was the answer I was looking for!  Never used myself, but is obviously on my ‘to do’ list now.  The best solution of course would be a revival of the web site in the near future perhaps by a local enthusiast or do ‘anoraks’ still exist?!

Hi Newforest

The Wayback Machine at Archive.org is the only site I can think of that might be helpful but it is really hard work (unless there’s a better way of using it than I’m aware of). They do have quite a number of pages saved but making sense of the URLs is sometimes tricky. The link below seems to always open in Calendar view but if you click the blue URLs button at the right of same line it will give you a list of pages and photos available*

https://web.archive.org/web/*;type=text/hampshireairfields.co.uk/*

* I say available in a very loose sense! Sometimes it just comes up with a blank page or puts you back to calendar view but, trust me, there are some photos and web pages there! I’d like to think there might be a better resource out there or, better still, the Hampshire Airfields website will make a welcome re-appearance!

This is sad news for me and probably many other readers and researchers.  This was a true labour of love , a mine of information and will be sadly missed, if true.  Is there not another web site for missing or overlooked web sites that can be located somewhere out there?!

It’s not looking good, AA. I’m also getting a “page does not exist” message. Frustratingly the home page is visible on the tripod.com site but that is as far as it goes and it only serves as a reminder of the wealth of information contained on the Hampshire Airfields site. Hopefully it will be only a temporary problem as it would be sad to lose such an excellent resource.
