HAND LUGGAGE – Whats the situation…

Hi Guys..

Whats the current situation on Hand Luggage??

Am i ok to take my TOMTOM in my hand luggage now?? also…. i know in the past they didnt like this… but i never got stopped… I have normally taken the power lead and cradle with me just in case me bag gets lost and then i have the “TOOL” to get me to where im going etc…

Am i ok to put with in my hand luggage or will this create an issue???

Also have they gone off the Clear Plastic bag’s??

Flying with Ryan Air from Stansted to Sweden (NYO)

Cheers

Thank you for your reply Paul F,

I will take your advise and ask at checkin… if all goes to plan with the traffic we should get to the airport for about 4 hours before we fly… (we are about 140 miles away, as you know what our UK motorways can be like!!

Hand luggage

RickT

Restrictions on cabin bag size are as stated earlier int he thread. Clear plastic bags are still in use for all liquids/gles and creams (Toiletries, drinks etc), no single container can be larger than 100ml, and all the containers you wish to take in hand luggage must fit within the sealed single clear placcy bag they give you (which is somewhat smaller than A4 sized). In effect this rules out taking any drinks through the security checks. However, any purchased once in departure lounge can be carried on board in hand luggage.

Electrical goods are not generally seen as an issue (at this point in time) and so should be okay in hand luggage, but don’t forget things can change overnight – we got caught out in the security situation last august, and had to pack all our electrical items (inc music players, digicams and a laptop) in hold luggage for our return to UK. Luckily all survived intact due to my “Blue-Peter” lifeskills allowing me to build suitably cushioned spaces in the hold-bound cases using only towels, clothes and some books.

So, electrical goods (inc phones, MP3, satnavs, cameras, laptops, leads, powerpacks, chargers etc) should not be an issue, however, I suggest you double check at check-in, before you hand over any hold bags so that you have a last-chance to transfer any contentious items into hold baggage you before the hold bags disappear off down the luggage conveyer belt.

Oh yes, and based on our experiences travelling through LGW since last summer’s change in security rules, whatever you do don’t cut things too fine timewise when deciding to pass through the passport control/security check into departure hall – queues here at LGW can, and do, suddenly grow at an alarming rate without much warning, meaning that it’s better to allow too much time than not enough when planning your check-in schedule. Long one are the days of turning up, checking in, and breezing stright through security in five mins flat 🙁

I can’t understand why anybody would have a problem with you taking your navigational aid. If there was a ban on “Tom Toms” in hand luggage, it would be only fair to put a stop to mobile telephones, laptop computers, mp3 players and other electricals, surely.

On numerous flights in Korea and onwards to the UK over Christmas, and again a couple of weeks ago, I was carrying a small suitcase as hand baggage. In it was my laptop computer, my PDA, three lots of power leads, two sets of headphones, a digital camera, a webcam and a memory card reader. There wasn’t a problem taking this equipment as hand baggage, but my bag was searched every time I went through a security checkpoint.

Hi all,

As im off in 2 days, please can someone just confirm that i WILL be able to take my TOMTOM and power lead in my hand luggage??

The reason i ask is that there is no way i wanna put it in my case and if i have to put it in my case i will do without.

Thanks for reading

The DfT website has details of the latest restrictions. http://www.dft.gov.uk/stellent/groups/dft_transsec/documents/page/dft_transsec_613514.hcsp
Stick to this and you won’t go wrong.

Cheers Paul…

heres a pic of the Rucksack… however its not going to be that full!!! LOL…. just a few little items!!!

Your thoughts please….. (otherwise i will pack it in the suitcase and not bother taking anything!!

RicKT

It’s a little difficult to tell from just the photo. Your best bet is to just measure it to be certain it fits.

Then again if it isn’t full I’m sure you could make it fit into a smaller space with a bit of creative shoving!

does that mean i cant take my ruck sack as hand luggage if there still on the clear bags?????

Cheers

RiCKT

Ah, sorry I misunderstood! Yes, you can take your ruck sack as long as it’s smaller than 56x45x25cm. I’ve taken my Lowepro Computrekker AW camera/laptop bag (which I think is ever so slightly thicker than 25cm) on four flights with FR in the last couple of weeks and haven’t had a problem, so you should be fine. 🙂

Hi Rickt,

The plastic bags are still required! You should be fine taking your TomTom in your hand luggage. I’ve flown a few times with FR over the last few weeks carrying an array of electronic gadgets and never had a problem, so I can’t see why that should be.

Hope that helps.
