Hello
I’m hoping someone can provide some information I’m struggling with on Hampden X2996, lost on 14 Nov 1940 over Germany. I’m looking for the aircrafts squadron code. I know 44 sqn aircraft wore KM – codes at that time, but I can’t find reference to its individual letter anywhere online.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

The PBS America documentary ‘After Chaos – Berlin’ contains a brief bit of B+W footage (at approx 10mins 50 secs of the programme) showing German soldiers picking over the wreckage of X2996. Can’t see the aircraft’s letter though.

Have you tried the Squadron ORB? Available via download from The National Archive; downloads were/are free. Squadron code letters are often listed in the daily report annexes.

Shame it doesn’t list X3023’s code letter. Aircraft crashed near Cromer, and my ATC Sqn attend a commeration ceremony. As a model maker I’d like to depict it

That’s great, thank you very much for finding it! I will take a look at the website you mentioned as well for any future reference.

Welcome to the forum….
According to uk.forceswarrecords.com. The site covers WWII Bomber and Fighter Command losses 1939-45. The individual code for X2996 was, A for Apple.

Edit – I have tried to go back into the site and can’t access it now – for some reason. However, RAF Commands website has a photo of the aircraft at its final resting place clearly showing its ID but no codes I’m afraid.
