Does anyone have any pics of the 3 that looped in unison at, IIRC, a 1936 Airshow ?
I find this biplane bomber utterly fascinating.
Cheers,

Thank’s for reminding mate

ALthough there are no Heyfords that I can find, it’s worth looking at www.britishpathe.com and searching their newsreel database.
They have free low-definition downloads of Hendon pageants, including the tied together aeros by Hawker Hinds (or Harts) and sadly, the mid-air referred to above.
The British Pathe website is a brilliant resource, but a warning. If you get into it, like me you’ll be there all afternoon!

While on this subject, are there any pics about that show any of the few Heyfords that were used after the start of WWII? You know, the ones used for radio/radar calibration and the ones used as glider tugs.

Thanks Phil, great pics as always !!!
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. They were well loved by their crews despite being doggggggggg slow !!
Retired in 1939, were mostly relegated to target-towing and tug.
Don’t believe anything of them survives (unfort).

I have spent nearly 8 hour’s looking again for a shot of the 3 Heyford’s Looping(or any Heyford’s looping) on the net 😮 , but have had no luck 🙁 .
I am guessing that there must be motion film taken of the Display 😉 , seeing the King was there  .
Maybe someone on here can point us in the right direction to where it could be found   .

Funny you mention the ugly Beast Turbo(Chris), I have been reading quiet a bit about them just the other day.
Seem’s they were well loved by there crew’s and were very agile for it’s shear size and weight, I had read about what you are looking for, and have surfed and surfed for it myself, but have had no luck as yet.
Have you found even one shot of the Heyford doing a loop, as I have not yet found one on the net, but I have read of many story’s of them being done often.
A while back there was a Heyford thread I think, And I tried to find it a few week’s back.
Please if there are any decent shot’s of the Beast out there please post away Lady’s and Gent’s

Certainly is amazing.
I’ve just read that the Heydons actually did the loop at the 1935 Air Show at Hendon.

Wow, the very thought of that is daunting.
They did some crazy things at airshows in those days! In A.E. Clouston’s book “Dangerous Skies” he tells of leading a nine-ship Hawker biplane formation that were all tied together, with which they looped and looped. He was with 25 Sqn and this was the 1933 Hendon Air Display. During a practice they crashed into each other at the top of the loop due to an air pocket! He lost half his prop. The plane beside him crumpled up and fell from the sky. The actual display on the day went well though and was the highlight of the show – I’ll bet it was! There’s a photo of the formation in the book.

No, but a friend of mine was a rigger on Heyfords for a short time when he first joined up – more than likely he is the last survivor with first hand knowledge of the beast.
