Handling machinery when dehydrated

The once a week medical pages and reports in the Daily Telegraph often throw up some interesting and useful tips and hints. About one year, ago there appeared a report concerning the effects of dehydration on people handling machinery, which of course would include pilots.

A trial was run on two control groups of participants; one group assessed for performance in handling motor vehicles before and after taking alcohol and the other group assessed for the same performance after being deprived of fluids.

The results roughly matched. The performance in controlling a motor vehicle of the dehydrated group was as poor as the performance of the group given sufficient alcohol to cause impairment but, not enough to make them fail a roadside breath test.

Not a lot if they are from that grouping described as ‘full of wind and #iss’. There’s plenty around.

How did the performance of pilots distracted by holding their bladders compare?
