From the evidence in Roobarb’s post – they have done a very nice job too.

Yes – I dont believe they have PL983’s original one either – I acquired that and moved it on to a different project too!

Very nice!!

Is the red crowbar authentic ?:diablo::dev2::);)

Sadly not – its a CAA requirement – we did use the dull red WWII paint which is very similar to red oxide primer! The stencils are authentic though!

BM597 does indeed have PL965’s original windscreen surround, but I cant for the life of me remember where it came from.

I think someone is doing new ones now.

Here are a few from me (there are afew small details to finish including the cowl fastener dashes and the R under the nose):

Roobs – sadly we did not have an original type screen to fit – would have liked to and would still like to (it also requires a canopy change as the front hoop is lower in profile on the wrap-around screen).

The Beach – not sure what the BBMF Lanc has to do with it?

The Big Picture – thank you – but this is how PL965 looked when she was in service with 2nd TAF in 1945, so that was the only choice of scheme for us. For some strange reason she has never been presented post resto like this until now.

She looks wonderful, Can’t wait to see her fly again soon.

On a more serious note, how long does it normally take to do a warbird repaint and what work is involved?

Thank you for the nice comments! It took literally months of weekends to paint strip her. It then took two days to prep her and mask her at Doncaster after which she was handed over to Peter Maidley who was contracted to apply the base primer PRU Blue top coat which took three days. Once the paint was dry and the masking removed she was flown back to her base at NW. There it took a further five days to apply roundels, markings and stencils. I estimate another two to three days needed to get her completely finished. So – all in all quite a long time!

An absolutely beautiful colour scheme, well done to all involved in the rework and repaint. Its great to see these old aircraft being returned to more original and accurate schemes, I can’t wait to see her out and about!

Still can’t help thinking that the camera window makes the roundel look like its been holepunched…:p

The ‘proper’ PR screen does take an external Mk1-5 armoured screen well, so can see why it would be on on ‘597. I remember PL983 having a screen made by some acquaintances near Bicester years back…it was cited that the distotion of the original screen was poor etc. I can fully understand that the perspex would not be that good at stopping a sizeable bird. Could always use thicker perspex/plexi!!!:)
I have pictures I took at the first resurgent Schneider race in the IOW with 983 and her Britannia sponsorship and race number.

Forgot to say that she is lovely in her scheme…well done!

I look at this shot of PL965 when on display in Holland and it brings ‘teardrops’ to my eyes.

Lovely stuff!
Isn’t the windscreen on BM597?

Thats what I hear too.

Looks very nice. How similar is it to the scheme the BBMF Mk 19 is now wearing? Be interesting to see those together.

The Mk 19 has the standard PR scheme – PL965 has the scheme as modified in January 1945 by 2nd Tactical Air Force directive to change to Type III roundels and re-paint spinners Night.

stunning. Is the P40 going to get a repaint or are they nursing it through to the release of ‘Red Tails’

Thank you – yes the nursing is over for the P-40 and she wil get a re-paint this year. Not sure when that film will ever get finished – we were on set nearly two years ago!

As I recall from the Hugh Smallwood book, the armoured screen was fitted in case of birdstrike. Could be wrong, though.

Very nice paint job by Peter Medley of Flying Colours at Doncaster (Finningley) and well researched markings, colours and detailing by Steve Atkin. Nice to see a different version of the PR Blue scheme and authentic to the actual airframe too. Just a bit of a shame that after all the hype about the “original engine” being fitted blah blah and this application of a historically correct PR scheme that the opportunity wasn’t grasped during the recent overhaul for an authentic screen to be fitted in place of that incorrect fighter one its had since the Rochester rebuild. I wonder what became of the one it had when it was at RAF Bruggen and then Overloon? Here’s what it should have. This one from PL983 taken recently:
