Hangar Damage

Just to let you guys know

The wind last week inflicted serious damage to the Beech Restoration SRA Hangar.

The front was effectively destroyed by a very strong northerly gust hitting the front canvas. It was peeled back onto itself and sorn down the centreline and along the left side.

2 steps forward and on step back it would seem. The rear of the hangar is looking great with Blue steel cladding to a height of about 18 feet to date.

Hopefully the fabric can be repaired and re fitted fairly soon so we can finish the hangar and then start on the aircraft again after a gap of over a year.

i will post a pic of the damage a little later

hangar damage

more damage in the winds of last week, all the tying off last saturday was ripped out so we had to do it all again.

put a cargo stap over the leading edge as suggested.

yesterday we cut all the steel to support the front.

we will get ther, it just takes time

no doubt we will be working in snow this weekend, won’t be the first time

On a nicer note, ran the Volpar Beech 18 yesterday. All ok apart from a fair amout of oil that fell out of the engines. Also put the differential into my kettenkrad.

There have been various rumours about Sandy’s ‘demise’ for sveral years – I will believe it when I see an obituary! The operation at Bruntingthorpe was quite short lived – Cranfield was a real eye opener!

Hi Cl –

its an ex-MOD RUBB hangar – which I believe was used in the Falklands! It belongs to the airfield and used to be used by the Lightning boys, prior to their erection of the QRA shed (ours is now knowN as a SRA shed – geddit!) with the kind assistance of the airfield we have been erecting it over the past year, it is basically a sectional galv tube frame covered in rubberised canvas sheet, we are in the throes of cladding it to make it a bit tougher, sadly God intervened as you can see…:(

It is being used to house our Beech 18, t-6g and other T-6 projects – see our website at www.beechrestorations.com

TT

Hi TT and all, just to add a little useless info here, there were two RUB hangers purchased from RAF Cottesmore by the Waltons back in about 1993ish.
One is still used by the car storage people on site.

The one you guys are now rebuilding was on ‘our’ Q shed pan but wasnt ever used by us at all, all manner of farm/stuff was stored in it over the years including the Maurice Bayliss Spitfire after it was resprayed and operated from Brunty for a short while, we offen helped him out with it, a thoughly nice chap.

Here’s a shot of it just prior to an engine run

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a273/320psi/Image3.jpg

And a shot of ‘your’ lads RUB as we began to empty it and clear the site back in May 2003

http://i13.photobucket.com/albums/a273/320psi/01LotsofclearingtodoAug2004.jpg

As for Sandy I didnt know he had passed away, boy I could tell a few stories as Im sure Phil can as well of the time he operated the Vampire/Vemon/Provost ‘fleet’ from Brunty in the early/mid 90’s, a one off was Sandy, RIP if the news is true.

Ive got some shots of the Vampires somewhere if your intersted ?

As I said guys if you need any help just ask

Cheers 🙂

Philip – I’m fairly certain that Sandy Topen is no longer with us but I cannot recall when or where I heard the news (not too recently I believe). Maybe someone else knows more or he’s been mentioned on other threads? He was quite a character as I recall.

Its worth throwing a rope over over the leading edge of a roof ,(either prior to, or during a storm); I’ve got one over the roof of my house at the moment thats been there for a couple of months.

I had a building destroyed christmas 1990 (thanks god!) and spent boxing day onwards putting it back up, after that I used to park a digger next to it and lower the bucket (gently) onto the roof; I’d often get up a 2am and go and start the digger up to do this when the wind got up.

Who said eccentric…

Hangar Damage

Out of interest what type of hangar is this Philip and what is its history? It looks a bit like one that used to be at Cranfield with the late Sandy Topen and more recently Tim Manna. Others similar were at Thorpe Park in the 1970s/80s and I think the gliding club at North Weald still have one. Unless I’m mistaken, the structure is a 1970s approximate replica of a WW1 Bessoneau hangar. Good luck with repairing and maintaining it anyway!

exactly as TT says.

“Late Sandy Topen”, is that right, has he passed away, reason i ask is i knew him very well and our Beech 18 used to belong to him when at Cranfield.

Hangar Damage

Hi Guys

it is a real kick in the teeth, we have spent almost a year doing this. mainly a couple or 3 of us doing all the work.

not been able to work on the plane for all that time or the year before it after we were asked to come out of the main hangar 9less said about that bit the better)

The intention is to clad to the top on the rear section. A set of sliding doors will be manufactured and installed on the front and then clad from the top of the doors to the top of the hangar.

It would be so nice to button it all up of an evening and not have to worry but no such luck and look at the weather today, i don’t know if it gonna be there on saturday.

this may seem like a daft question but…

are the ultimate aims for this building to be totally cladded?

the damage fortunately is only limited to the first ten feet of the front canvas, no damage whatsoever to any of the aircraft.

This picture shows the undamaged rear aspect

thanks Andy, i think we will be ok but might give you guys a shout if we start to struggle, i mean struggle more than we already are struggling that is.

philip

After all the effort that you folks have put in this must have come as something of a kick in the teeth.

The big question I have is “did the little pig escape to the hangar of Sticks or Bricks?”

some of the people we have in our “team” don’t even do the first ten mins, cus they never turn up and that is a really annoying, problem is they won’t see this so i am wasting my time again.

Bet they will be there when the T6/ Beech 18 are flying though……

You’ve been hiding in the hedge watching me through your binoculars again havent you – now what did Mr Judge say about that? Thats right – its naughty…
