I met the man for the first time recently during a book signing at the Aviation Bookshop and he is an absolute gentleman. The way he can recall information and data from 60+ years ago is quite remarkable. I await his updated appreciation of the Luftwaffe types he flew and tested with baited breath!
cheers

A remarkable and unassuming man – I always enjoy his interviews when they crop up on the History channel programmes etc, I’ve read and re-read his books like many on here.

I can only echo the sentiments of all who have gone before…
I have read (and re-read) the classic ‘Wings On My Sleeve’ many times.
Indeed, a very Happy Birthday to you Sir!
Out… Roxeth.

There seem to have been a lot like that from that era. My dad’s a quiet unassuming chap and very modest about what he did in WWII. A lot of them are that way because the memories are too painful for them to talk about.

Happy birthday, Winkle!
Agree entirely with all the above : one of the most pleasant, unassuming gentlemen in the business, always willing to share his wealth of knowledge, with a modesty befitting a true hero of our time. God Bless you Sir, and thank you. Happy Birthday!

I can echo that. I have met him on many ocasions and can testify that he is one of the nicest and most down to earth blokes you could hope to meet.
